Two men have been charged with violent offences after an axe was allegedly thrown at a police car during unrest in Nauiyu, south of Darwin.

Earlier this week, police said officers were responding to reports of a number of people armed with weapons driving dangerously in the community on Sunday night.

They said an axe allegedly thrown at the window of a car carrying two officers struck one on the arm and shattered glass over both.

In a statement issued on Thursday afternoon, police said two men aged 24 and 25 had been arrested on Monday.

They said the pair had since been charged with aggravated assault, going armed with a weapon at night, endangering the occupants of a vehicle and recklessly endangering serious harm.

Some community members reached by the ABC confirmed there has been recent unrest in the region.

The Victoria Daly Regional Council was also contacted for more information.

In their statement NT Police said officers are looking for a third person they believe was involved in the incident.

They said there had been no further reports of serious incidents in the community, which is also known as Daly River.

The men have been bailed by police and are due to face court in March.
