An 18-year-old man has been charged over an alleged assault that left an older man dead at a car park in Darwin's northern suburbs.

The 39-year-old man was found unconscious in the car park outside the Rapid Creek market precinct in Millner on Tuesday night.

A short time later he was declared dead at the scene.

NT Police said a man was taken into custody yesterday as officers investigated reports of an altercation prior to the older man's death.

The 18-year-old man has since been charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering serious harm and unlawfully cause serious harm.

He briefly appeared in court on Thursday and his case was adjourned to May 3.

Police said the investigation into the man's death remains ongoing, after saying on Wednesday they believed up to four people may have been involved.

The victim has been identified and next of kin notified of his death, police said.
