NT COVID-19 hospitalisations jump to record high as 492 cases are recorded

An indoor mask mandate is in place across the NT, with many also opting to wear masks outdoors. (ABC News: Che Chorley)

The number of people in Territory hospitals with COVID-19 has increased from 72 to 84 overnight, NT Health Minister Natasha Fyles has announced.

There are three people in intensive care.

The NT recorded 492 new coronavirus cases overnight, bringing the total number of active cases to 3,208.

There are 44 coronavirus patients receiving treatment at Royal Darwin Hospital, including two in the intensive care unit.

There are 32 patients in hospital in Alice Springs, including one in intensive care.

Territory-wide, 10 people are receiving oxygen.

There is one COVID-19 patient in hospital in Nhulunbuy, and none in Katherine hospital.

Of today's new cases, 319 were detected in the Top End, and 78 in Central Australia.

A total of five cases have been recorded in town camps around Alice Springs.

On Tuesday, Central Australia's peak Aboriginal health body called for a complete lockdown of the region to curb what it called a "dire" situation as the virus continued to spread into vulnerable populations.

Nine new cases were recorded at the Alice Springs prison, bringing total cases there to 122.

COVID-19 cases have also been detected in high-risk settings in Darwin, Ms Fyles said.

Five cases were recorded at a housing facility run by Anglicare, and two at Barbara James House for cancer patients.

Two new cases were recorded in the mental health ward at Royal Darwin Hospital, Ms Fyles said, prompting authorities to treat the facility as a "red zone".

"What it means is that we are minimising the contact within those wards and we're also making sure staff are wearing the appropriate PPE, and then we're utilising other parts of the hospital," she said.

"We've got further areas [where] we can care for people with mental illness that stops them potentially coming into contact with people on those wards already."

Fyles: Food supply not a concern

Ms Fyles said although parts of the Stuart Highway had recently been cut off in South Australia due to flooding, there was "no reason for concern" about food shortages.

"Sometimes your favourite item isn't available, and you have to look for an alternative," she said.

"But we've been talking to the major supermarkets and those that supply the independent groceries and they're not expecting huge disruptions."

She said the road and train line were due to reopen in coming days.

No changes to current lockdowns or lockouts

Ms Fyles said the lockouts and lockdowns currently in place would remain unchanged.

A lockdown is in place in Milikapiti until January 27, and in Gunyangara, Utopia Homelands and Wurrumiyanga until January 29.

The East Arnhem Aboriginal community of Galiwin'ku will remain in lockdown until at least January 31.

Lockouts are in place in Alice Springs, Amoonguna, Yuendumu and Yuelamu until January 30.

For everywhere else, an indoor mask mandate remains in place.
