Body of NSW missing man found in water

A man's body has been found in the NSW Hunter region, a day after the body of an elderly woman was also found in the water at Lake Macquarie.

Police were called to Moonee Beach about 2.30pm on Monday after the woman's body was spotted in the water.

The woman is yet to be formally identified but it is believed she was in her 80s.

Police held fears for a missing man in his 70s, who was known to the woman, and undertook an extensive search.

About 10am on Tuesday, PolAir officers who were patrolling the area found the body of a man offshore around 2.5 kilometres south of Birdie Beach.

The body was recovered a short time later.

While the man is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be the missing man who is aged in his 70s.
