Rory Amon, the NSW Liberals MP for the electorate of Pittwater, has been arrested and charged with 10 child sexual assault offences.
Amon, who has held the state seat since 2023, was arrested at Manly Police Station at around 6am on Friday morning.
“He was charged with five counts have sexual intercourse with person over 10 and under 14, two counts attempt sexual intercourse child over 10 under 14, two counts indecent assault person under 16 years of age and commit act of indecency with person under 16 years,” read a statement by NSW Police.
Following an extensive investigation, and the establishment of Strike Force NOORAL by NSW Police in March 2023, Rory Amon was arrested this morning.
The 35-year-old politician and former lawyer was given strict conditional bail, and will appear at Manly Local Court on September 18.
In a statement made on Friday, Amon denied the charges made against him, and said he will make his case in court.
“Today I have been charged in relation to events alleged to have taken place in 2017,” he said.
“I deny all charges, and will make my case in the courts, not in the media. Accordingly, I will make no further comment on the case.”
In June 2022, detectives launched an investigation into reports of an alleged sexual assault in Mona Vale. Police were told a teenage boy was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man known to him in July 2017.
Amon asked to resign from NSW Liberals
Rory Amon was the NSW Opposition’s assistant spokesperson for youth.
Leader of the NSW Liberal Party Mark Speakman has said the charges are “extremely serious”, and that he requested Amon’s resignation as a result.
“While Mr Amon is entitled to the presumption of innocence, a criminal trial will be some time away and in the meantime the citizens of Pittwater are entitled to have a Member of Parliament who can discharge their duties in the community fully,” Speakman told press.
“I therefore also asked Mr Amon to resign from the New South Wales Parliament, effective immediately. He has tendered his resignation to the Speaker. As the matter is before the courts, I do not intend to make any further comment.”
Amon has now quit the Liberal party, and his page on the party’s website has been removed.
It has been reported that his family are blindsided by the allegations.
