New South Wales Government procurement reform is needed to target more local manufacturers or risk losing them to other jurisdictions with more favourable policies, a state inquiry heard Wednesday.
The inquiry into state government procurement practices and their impact on social development was told that public servants should be basing decisions on the additional value of manufactured products rather than just the price. The fundamental differences of innovative options like procuring drones instead of helicopters must also be factored into the state’s buying, witnesses said.
Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC) chief executive Dr Jens Goennemann told the inquiry this will only happen if the government sets a long term strategic direction that agencies can follow through the state’s devolved procurement system.
