NSW Deputy Labor Leader Prue Car has revealed she has been diagnosed with kidney cancer.
The member for Londonderry in north-western Sydney has been on leave which will continue as she undergoes treatment.
"I was found to have a large tumour on my kidney," Ms Car said in a statement.
"It would be no surprise to you all that this has come as quite a shock."
She said she planned to stay on in parliament after finishing her cancer treatment.
"I look forward to being back out and about soon fighting for our community," she said.
"Contesting the 2023 NSW state election as the Labor candidate for Londonderry and, as Deputy Labor Leader."
Ms Car was elected to the parliament to represent the safe Labor western seat in 2015.
She has been the Shadow Education Minister since 2019 and was elevated to the party's Deputy Leader when Chris Minns took the leadership a year ago.
She was previously a Penrith Councillor.
Ms Car has a young son.
