Tom Burgess sent off in golden point as Cronulla edge Souths
Cronulla sits a little more comfortably in the top four after a dramatic 21-20 win over South Sydney.
Coming off an admirable loss to the Panthers last week, the Sharks moved to third place behind Penrith and North Queensland with the victory over the Rabbitohs, which came via a Nicho Hynes field goal from 20 metres out.
It came on the back of a penalty Cronulla was awarded when Rabbitohs prop Tom Burgess hit Sharks winger Ronaldo Mulitalo high with a swinging arm, earning himself an early shower.
Burgess became the second NRL player to be sent off in as many nights, after Nathan Cleary was given his marching orders for a lifting tackle in Penrith's loss to Parramatta on Friday night.
South Sydney were on a run of four straight wins heading into the clash with another in-form finals-bound side on Saturday, and Alex Johnston got the try-scoring started on the night, before Cronulla's wingers hit back.
First Connor Tracey crossed on the right, before Mulitalo flew high above the pack for a stunning try with half-time approaching.
Latrell Mitchell struck back for the Rabbitohs just after the break leaving the teams in a second-half arm-wrestle at 14-14.
Andrew Fifita broke the deadlock with a barnstorming run in the 68th minute, but on the back of a brilliant one-on-one strip by Keaon Koloamatangi, Tevita Tatola scored with three minutes left on a crash play right next to the posts.
There was controversy as replays suggested he may have come up short with his initial effort before promoting the ball onto the line, but the bunker ruled his momentum took him into the in-goal.
Despite the apparently simple conversion attempt, Mitchell hit the left upright with his attempt, but managed to tie the scores, and neither side could poke their nose back ahead in regulation.
In extra time, Mitchell booted three field-goal attempts dead, while Matt Moylan missed chances for the Sharks before Hynes stepped up in the second period.
Tigers stun Broncos in Brisbane
Wests Tigers have moved off the bottom of the ladder with a 32-18 upset win over the Brisbane Broncos at Lang Park.
Coming off a controversial and disappointing loss to the Cowboys last week, the Tigers bounced back in a big way against the Broncos, who were coming off three straight wins.
The Tigers were on a run of seven successive losses, which had left them in 16th spot, but Saturday night's win bumped them ahead of the Titans.
More to come.

Raiders remain in tight race for eighth spot
Canberra have continued their push towards the NRL finals, defeating struggling Gold Coast 36-24 at CBUS Super Stadium.
The Raiders moved into ninth position on the ladder with the seven tries to four victory on Saturday, their fourth win from their past five starts.
Nick Cotric and Sebastien Kris scored doubles for the visitors as the Raiders racked up their highest score of the season, while Jayden Campbell's own try-scoring double was mere consolation for the Titans.
Lock Adam Elliott was impressive with 126 running metres for the Raiders but limped off early in the second half with a leg injury and failed to return in a potential headache for Canberra coach Ricky Stuart.
In-form front-rower Joseph Tapine may also find himself in hot water with the judiciary after he was sin-binned in the first half for throwing a punch at Titan David Fifita in an off-the-ball scuffle.
Former Titan Jamal Fogarty also picked up a try-assist as well as eight points off the boot in his first match back on the Gold Coast following his off-season move to the Raiders.
The defeat is Gold Coast's ninth in a row and will only increase the pressure on under-fire coach Justin Holbrook as the Titans battle to avoid a second wooden spoon in four years.
