Roosters beat Broncos 24-20 after insane finish, featuring three tries in final five minutes

The Roosters have beaten the Broncos 24-20 in one of the more insane finishes to an NRL game.

It came after a golden-point 25-24 win for the Warriors over the Cowboys earlier in the night in Redcliffe, which somehow ended up being the less hectic finish on the night.

An hour down the road, the Broncos and Roosters played out a thrilling contest at Lang Park, with multiple lead changes setting up a hectic finish, ultimately ending in a tight win for the visitors.

Joey Manu and Sam Walker appeared to have won the game for the Roosters when Manu snared an intercept and crashed over from dummy half at the other end from the ensuing set of six to tie the game at 16, with Walker slotting a sideline conversion to give them a two-point lead with five minutes left.

It seemed Walker had put another dagger in Brisbane when he grubbered for Sitili Tupouniua to cross with three-and-a-half minutes left, but the Broncos would not go away.

Tupouniua knocked on off the short kick-off and off the resultant scrum, Adam Reynolds chipped over the top for Corey Oates, with a wicked bounce taking the ball past Kevin Naiqama and into the hands of the Brisbane winger, who finished his hat-trick before injuring his leg while celebrating.

But Reynolds uncharacteristically missed a relatively straightforward shot at goal, meaning Brisbane could not level the score with a two-point field goal or penalty goal and would have to go searching for a try.

In the ultimate salt-in-the-wound moment, the Broncos got help two penalties — one with three seconds left and one after the final siren — but could not make good on either opportunity.

Brisbane had a 10-0 lead at half-time thanks to powerful tries from Corey Oates and Kotoni Staggs, the latter of which will likely be a contender for try of the year.

The Roosters struck back through Walker and Manu, before a superb aerial effort from Oates gave the hosts the lead once again heading into the final quarter of the game.

Things only got more topsy-turvy from there, with the Roosters thrilled to get out of Brisbane with the win, while Broncos coach Kevin Walters should be pleased to see his team refusing to give up even when momentum swung against them

Warriors edge Cowboys in extra time thanks to Shaun Johnson field goal

Earlier, Shaun Johnson drilled a field goal in golden point extra time as the Warriors twice came from behind to beat North Queensland 25-24 in a Redcliffe NRL shootout.

The Warriors trailed 18-6 and then 24-18, after drawing level with tries either side of half-time, as both teams sniffed a chance to improve to 3-2 on Friday night.

But it was the Warriors with all the chances late in the game, Johnson eventually winning it for his nomads at their adopted home with his third field goal attempt and second in extra time.

The halfback's first effort looked on track but was smothered by Jake Granville, before teammate Reece Walsh sliced his effort right with effectively the final play after 80 minutes.

Johnson then missed his first attempt after Granville pressured again, before sidestepping and drilling a low effort that snuck over the bar.

Earlier, the Cowboys twice looked to have the contest under control, Tom Dearden's solo effort to dummy and score continuing his fine start to the season.

There was only one mistake in the first 20 minutes but that soon changed.

First Warriors forward Addin Fonua-Blake's lazy grab at a kick in-goal missed, allowing Scott Drinkwater the easiest of tries in his first game of the season.

Replacing injured Cowboys fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Drinkwater could then only watch as Chanel Harris-Tavita's 40-20 was successful.

Josh Curran then strolled over for the Warriors to make it 18-12 at the break, while they levelled it soon after the restart when Murray Taulagi dropped the kick-off and Kodi Nikorima scored untouched from dummy half.

Centres Valentine Holmes and Euan Aitken then traded tries, before both sides managed try-saving tackles in the final five minutes, before Johnson broke the deadlock in overtime.
