'Nowhere is safe' warn locals as teenager stabbed in Leeds' 'most peaceful area'

Moortown Corner is a Leeds area known for its cafés, charity shops, bakeries and a busy Marks and Spencer. A peaceful spot where locals can wonder about their business and sun themselves on a bench while the weather continues to improve.

Moortown is the safest area in Leeds, according to crimerate.co.uk with only 60 incidents reported in 2022, but horror struck Monday evening (May 8) when a 17-year-old was stabbed in a suspected attempted robbery involving three male suspects on the junction of Street Lane and Allerton Place just before 7.51pm.

Residents have warned "nowhere in the world is safe" after the ususally tranquil area was swarmed by police and emergency service crews. The teen fortunately surivived the incident and was rushed to hospital with injuries to his chest and arm.

Retired taxi driver Graham Stone, 75, has lived in the area for more than 50 years. He said: "Nowhere in this world is safe. Half way around the world is just as bad.

"I have travelled, so I know. it doesn't shock me at all. There's no big deal about Moortown. If you walk about with your eyes open, nowhere is peaceful. Nothing surprises me."

A shopkeeper, who didn't wish to be named, said: "I was shocked it happened in Moortown. You don't really hear things like that happening around here. It doesn't ususally happen so far north in Leeds."

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "At 7.51pm yesterday, police were called to an incident at the junction of Street Lane and Allerton Place in Moortown where a 17-year-old male had been stabbed.

"The victim was taken to hospital with injuries to his chest and arm that were later confirmed as being not life threatening. A scene was put in place to undergo forensic examination.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident, which is being treated as an attempted street robbery involving three male suspects."
