Novak Djokovic, the 37-year-old tennis star from Serbia, has withdrawn from the upcoming Cincinnati Open less than a week after securing his first Olympic gold medal. The announcement of his withdrawal was made by the Cincinnati event organizers. Djokovic, who claimed the title at last year's Cincinnati Open, will not be defending his title this year as the tournament is set to begin next week, serving as a crucial hard-court warm-up ahead of the US Open.
The US Open, the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, is scheduled to commence in New York on August 26, with the draw taking place on August 22. Djokovic, a 24-time major champion, is the reigning champion at the US Open after clinching his 24th career major title in 2023.
Following his victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the men's singles final at the Paris Games, Djokovic's decision to withdraw from the Cincinnati Open was met with understanding by tournament director Bob Moran. Moran expressed eagerness to witness Djokovic back on the court soon, acknowledging the quick turnaround from Djokovic's Olympic triumph to the Cincinnati event.
With Djokovic's withdrawal, France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard has been granted the opportunity to enter the Cincinnati Open field, joining other top tennis players set to compete in the tournament.
