Notts County's mushy peas go viral as fans from England and America disagree on football food

Notts County have sparked a worldwide debate on the quality of football food as fans from England and America failed to agree on the Magpies' cup of mushy peas and mint sauce.

The immensely popular Football Scran account on Twitter posted a photo of the Magpies' £1.50 offering to more than its 250,000 followers.

Followers are asked to vote whether it's 'scran' or 'no scran' but on this occasion, the only option available to vote was 'scran'.

Notts' offering was loved by fans in England but that was not the case across the Atlantic where American 'soccer' lovers were enthused by what they saw.

Football Scran predicted that it would not go down well with the account tweeting: "If this reaches the US I think my account will actually get banned."

And it was not long before the Tweets piled in from American fans who could not believe it was being served.

Here's what some of them had to say on Twitter.

Mikal Bridge: "There is no way Europeans eat this."

Ben 10: "British “food”.

419: "This is diabolical. Worst thing I've seen on this page."

A Girl Has No Name: "What in Gods name is this."

Vijay Mueller: "HOW DO PEOPLE EAT THIS?!?!?!?"

Charlie: "Nah man, UK people different."

Simon Gerowell: "Pass. Pass. For the love of God, PASS."

And yet the view back in England from Notts fans as well as those of rivals clubs across the country agreed that it was excellent football food.

Indeed last August, the mushy pea stall made a welcome return to the Victoria Market to serve one of the city's oldest food traditions. It is also immensely popular at the Goose Fair.

And it certainly is a hit with football fans of all ages in England judging by the response on Twitter. Here's what some fans said about peas and mint sauce.

EmmaJaneDriver: "I would absolutely smash this. Top tier snacking."

Sally: "This is my comfort food at home too but the best is still the stand on the corner at goose fair."

Darren Doull: "Best footy scran."

Stephen Currant: "Nottingham staple this, mushy peas and mint sauce. Spectacular."

Notts County Talk: "Some of the replies to this are great! Can't beat mushy peas and mint sauce."

Sharon Jones: "Lovely stuff. And I say that as a native Mancunian."

Alex West: "It's a proper Nottingham thing this is. And they are incredible. Loads of mint sauce."
