Notts County midfielder walking disciplinary tightrope ahead of important Wrexham clash

Notts County have enjoyed an excellent start to the National League season under new manager Luke Williams.

After ten games, the Magpies sit third in the table following their 3-1 victory over York City at the weekend with goals from Quevin Castro and Macaulay Langstaff ensuring Notts returned to winning ways after their first defeat of the campaign to Dorking Wanderers the weekend before.

Their next encounter comes in the form of Altrincham, who come into the game off the back of a 1-0 victory over Aldershot with Ryan Colclough's goal enough to seal all three points for The Robins.

However, one Notts player in particular must be wary of his discipline against Altrincham this weekend. In all of England’s professional leagues, players will receive a one-match ban if they collect five yellow cards in their team’s opening 19 matches of a league campaign.

Midfielder Jim O'Brien currently has four yellow cards to his name so far this season. A fifth booking in the game against Altrincham at Meadow Lane would be a huge blow for the Magpies, meaning the 34-year-old would miss Notts' top of the table clash with Wrexham on Tuesday, October 4.

It has been a fantastic season so far for the Scotsman and his experience in midfield would be a huge loss if he were to be suspended against The Dragons.

This could give Notts boss Williams a huge decision ahead of this weekend's fixture on whether to rest the midfielder ahead of the visit of Wrexham or risk the likelihood of a caution.

Ed Francis, Ruben Rodrigues and Aden Baldwin all have two warnings this season, with seven of the first-team squad having picked up a singular caution this season.
