Notts County boss highlights 'warrior' display after agonising injury in Southend draw

Luke Williams has branded Quevin Castro a warrior following his performance in Notts County's 2-2 draw against Southend at Roots Hall.

The Magpies had taken the lead in the first half courtesy of Macaulay Langstaff's 18th goal of the season, with Ollie Kensdale responding with the Shrimpers' equaliser despite appeals of a push in the area.

Cedwyn Scott restored parity with a trademark strike from the edge of the area, wrong-footing Southend 'keeper Collin Andeng-Ndi, before Jack Bridge's cross was turned home by Callum Powell with the aid of an Aden Baldwin deflection.

In Notts' quest for an equaliser, the West Brom loanee was introduced into the action with nine minutes to go, replacing Ruben Rodrigues in the more advanced midfield role.

But just two minutes after coming on, the 21-year-old was seen going down off the ball clutching his arm following a Southend corner, with Castro looking in severe discomfort following the challenge.

The midfielder almost won the game for the Magpies with a trademark free-kick that whistled beyond the Shrimpers net, all the more impressive doing it was just one arm.

Having already made all three substitutions, with Castro being the last of those, the Magpies would have been forced to play with 10 men for the remainder of the encounter.

But speaking after the game, Williams revealed that despite Castro being in severe discomfort following the challenge, he wanted to continue, a trait that impressed the Notts boss.

"It was his shoulder in fact, and his hand was up to try and protect it," explained Williams.

"I cannot explain how much pain the boy was in; he was in agony. After the game his jaw was clenched together and he's biting so hard to relieve the pain somehow.

"He nearly scored one of his trademark free-kicks with one arm and no balance, so I am very impressed with Quevin.

"Because he could have quite easily said to me that he could not continue and had to come off, then we would have to play the remainder of the game with one less player.

"But he showed the qualities of a warrior to continue when he was in that kind of agony."
