Nottinghamshire woman recalls ‘surreal’ moment unidentified object smashes into car windscreen on M1

A Nottinghamshire woman has recalled the ‘surreal’ moment when an unidentified object - which she believes to be a UFO - hit her windscreen while driving on the motorway. The woman was driving with her mum and cousin at around 7pm on May 2, when a black circular object they believe to be more than ten centimetres in length “appeared from the clouds” and smashed her windscreen.

The incident happened just before Junction 25 while driving from Nottingham to Leicester. She said: “I saw something coming towards me but before I had a chance to do anything about it, it hit the car and smashed the windscreen on the right-hand side.

“It was quite surreal. I just remember saying ‘What the hell was that?’ I was just in disbelief. I looked in the mirrors and there was nothing I could see on the road.”

Video footage shows the car travelling southbound on the M1 when the incident occurred. The object can be seen flying with speed, diagonally, from the left side of the shot.

The impact can be heard on the video, and the force of the hit caused the right-hand side of the windscreen to smash. The incident has left the driver without a car until the damage is fixed.

The group say they were not near any other vehicles or bridges at the time of the incident, causing their confusion about where the object could have come from and what it was. The group were forced to continue on after the hit but decided to stop at the first chance to assess the damage and review the dashcam footage.

The driver added: “My first thought was that somebody had thrown something because there wasn’t a car close enough that it could have come off. I held my finger on the video to watch it in frames [the dashcam footage], to see where it came from, but there were no bridges, it’s just trees, there’s nothing around.

“I followed this ball thing back up and it appeared from the clouds.” The driver decided to share their story after seeing a Facebook post by Nottinghamshire Live, which showed a circular object flying above the Red Arrows at the Coronation, which some members of the public believed to be a UFO.

Speaking on her belief in UFOs the driver added: “I’m open. I have an open mind on a lot of things. If I see it then I believe it.

“My husband said it could have been a piece of a meteorite, but because it came so fast, and there was no sign of it in my mirrors after. My passengers were turning around looking for it and they couldn’t see anything.

“To say this to you straight-faced without seeing it, I wouldn’t be able to do it." The driver hopes that the incident will be a freak occurrence and that it won't impact her confidence in taking to the roads.

"I'll think twice before going to the motorway I think," she joked. "I'm quite a resilient person and know that I just need to carry on otherwise I wouldn't do [drive] it again."
