Nottinghamshire state school named one of the best in East Midlands

A Nottinghamshire state school has been named as one of the best in the East Midlands as part of The Times' top schools list. Rushcliffe school jumped up six places from 2019 in The Times rankings to 209th in the country, with 78.5 percent of students achieving A* to B at A level.

The school sits in 7th place in the East Midlands state school list. Two other Nottinghamshire schools found their way on to the prestigious East Midlands list for top independent schools. Nottingham High School has been heralded as the best independent secondary school in the region - jumping 21 places to 63rd in the country.

Nottingham Girls' High School GDST placed fifth on the same list. The top performing schools were revealed in Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide 2023, published online.

The rankings in the secondary school league tables are determined by the percentage of examination entries gaining A*-B at A-level (which is given double weighting) and the percentage of entries returning A* and A grades, and those graded 9, 8 and 7, at GCSE and iGCSE. Nottingham High School, the school previously named The Times East Midlands Independent School of the Decade, had the best results in the region.

“Boys and girls alike have benefited from the move to coeducation (in 2015),” says Kevin Fear, Nottingham High’s head teacher. “But school is about much more than results.

"A great school is about people and not buildings, and the buzz when we reopened after lockdown was electric. An extensive bursary programme means a greater mix of pupils can reap the benefits of the outstanding education delivered by the school, which has jumped from 175th in 2015 to 63rd in the independent national rankings this year.

“Many in the most deprived parts of the city only have the option of going to a failing school,” Mr Fear says. “Here we can offer a world of opportunity.”
