Nottinghamshire school forced into emergency closure due to 'major' water leak

A Nottinghamshire school has been forced to close after investigators discovered a 'major' underground water leak.

King Edward Primary School and Nursery issued a statement on Monday, January 17, informing parents that the school would temporarily shut.

Emergency work will be carried out by Severn Trent to fix the leak which is believed to be emitting around 200 litres of water per hour from a pipeline under the school grounds.

Students are currently learning from home.

A Facebook update posted by the school yesterday read: "An email and text has been sent to all parents/carers today confirming school will remain closed."

A letter that was sent to families on Monday read: “As you will have noticed this morning, over the weekend we have experienced an underground water leak.

“Severn Trent Water have attended site this morning and have confirmed it is a major leak with us losing about 200l of water every hour.

“Unfortunately, to investigate and rectify the major leak, the water onsite will need to be turned off, meaning we will not have toilet facilities, kitchen facilities or handwashing on site.

“Please can all children be collected from school today at 1pm from their usual collection point.

“Home learning will be provided and laptops will be issued as children leave today for eligible families.”

The facility, in St Andrew Street, Littleworth, will remain closed until Thursday at the earliest.
