Nottinghamshire residents say it's 'strange' as police remain on site of human remains discovery one week on

People near the Nottinghamshire field where human remains have been found say it is "strange" that police remain on the scene one week on from the discovery. Nottinghamshire Police first arrived at the scene on Coxmoor Road in Sutton last Wednesday (April 26), just before 7pm.

A member of the public came across suspected human remains, which police have since confirmed are "not ancient." A heavy police presence has been in the area since the discovery and a large section of Coxmoor Road remains closed in both directions.

Last Thursday (April 27), Nottinghamshire Police said they expected officers to remain at the scene for the next seven days. That would mean officers leaving by the end of this Thursday (April 4).

But with that deadline rapidly approaching, forensic officers can still be seen at the site near the Little Nomanshill car park and there are now two forensic tents. Some of those living nearby have expressed their surprise that the investigation is still ongoing.

Richard Franczak, 72, who lives off nearby Kirkby Road, said: "It is quite strange that it has been going on for this long. Usually it seems as though most police incidents are finished within 48 hours, but they've still got the resources there and it must be a very costly operation.

"You do hear bits and bobs on the grapevine but overall there seems to have been a bit of a news blackout on it since last week. We don't know anything yet, but I would say that area is very suspect and it certainly isn't somewhere where people should be going on their own at night."

Mike Farley, who also lives off Kirkby Road and is retired, said: "I suppose it will take as long as it takes. It is now a week and we've occasionally been watching the news, but there haven't been any developments. They've obviously still got work to do there.

"I wouldn't say it's been particularly concerning for us as we're a bit far back from where this has been found, perhaps if it was a bit closer people would be worried. There hasn't been much disruption, but I do know drivers using Coxmoor Road have had to go up Derby Road and because there's no proper filter system at the traffic lights, that has been backing up a bit."

One woman who lives off Kirkby Road, who did not want to be named, added: "I am absolutely surprised that they are still there because it has been a week now and I wouldn't have thought it would take this long. It hasn't been causing much disruption for us. It will be very interesting to see what the police eventually come out with."

In the most recent update given by police, County Area Commander for Nottinghamshire Police Superintendent Claire Rukas said: "We know this discovery will cause considerable concern in the local community. But I would like to reassure people that everything that can be done is being done and will continue to be done. First and foremost, our priority is to identify this individual so that we can locate and inform their loved ones."
