Nottinghamshire Police officer told to remove badge as public complaint sparks investigation

Nottinghamshire Police has issued a statement after concerns over an officer's badge from a member of the public. A police spokesperson said the matter has now been referred to the force's Professional Standards Directorate for investigation.

It comes after concerns raised by a member of the public about a badge displayed on an officer’s uniform. The force said the officer has been told to remove it and all officers and staff "have been instructed to ensure this symbol is not displayed on their uniform".

Nottinghamshire Live understands that the badge in question had a symbol which has been associated with racism after counter-protests at a Black Lives Matters march, according to some reports. Similar badges are available for purchase online.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Griffin, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We are aware of concerns raised by a member of the public about a badge displayed on an officer’s uniform.

"The matter was referred to the force’s Professional Standards Directorate for investigation. Our uniform guidelines are very clear that we expect all officers to portray a positive and professional image at all times.

“The officer has been told to remove this badge and all officers and staff have been instructed to ensure this symbol is not displayed on their uniform and not to display similar badges on their uniforms. The member of the public who raised concerns has been updated about this course of action.”
