Nottinghamshire power stations will be using Russian coal to supply heating for UK homes up until the end of the year, according to reports. Uniper's plant in Ratcliffe-on-Soar and EDF's West Burton A near Retford will both continue to use their existing coal stocks for at least the next few months.
The Mail Online reported that EDF expects to use up its Russian stocks in the next few months, whereas the Uniper site could last until 2023. The Ratcliffe-on-Soar station is due to close in September 2024.
Many MPs have called for a ban on Russian coal in Britain, with large steel makers, including Tata and British Steel, already stopping its use. EDF's coal is thought to have been bought in 2021.
The firm began decommissioning half of the West Burton A plant last summer and the shutdown of the remainder will begin in October. Uniper said it had decided not to extend existing Russian coal supply contracts and it expects to have completed a 'diversification strategy' away from Russian coal by the end of the year. The country had been its largest supplier.
