Nottinghamshire MP given promotion in cabinet reshuffle

A Nottinghamshire MP has been given a promotion in a government cabinet reshuffle.

Brendan Clarke Smith, MP for Bassetlaw, was announced as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Minister of State on Friday, February 11.

He said he was "honoured and privileged" after being appointed.

The role of a PPS is to act as an unpaid assistant to a minister.

In a tweet, Mr Clarke-Smith said: "Honoured and privileged to be appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Minister of State (Minister Without Portfolio) in the Cabinet Office."

He was praised by fellow Conservative MP, Chris Clarkson, who replied: "Congratulations mate. Well deserved."

His appointment comes shortly after Mark Spencer, MP for Sherwood, was given a new role as Leader of the House of Commons after previously being Chief Whip.
