Nottinghamshire council confirms when £150 council tax rebate will be paid

Some Nottinghamshire residents are still awaiting their council tax rebate of £150. Councils including Nottingham City Council, Mansfield District Council and Browtowe Borough Council have already confirmed this month that payments are being made.

Now, councils that are yet to begin making payments have offered residents a timeframe of when they can expect to receive their money. Rushcliffe Borough Council has confirmed that it will begin to pay out the £150 council tax rebate tomorrow (Friday, April 29).

The council has said that most residents who pay their council tax via direct debit will receive the £150 central government rebate direct to their bank account. Letters will be sent residents confirming the payment has been made but no further action is required.

The Government states in its official guidance: “All Council Tax Rebate grants should be paid as soon as possible from April.” The council tax rebate is being paid to households whose home was in council tax bands A to D in England on 1 April.

It comes amid warnings from consumer experts of "civil unrest" as the cost of living crisis rages on. Bassetlaw District Council is also yet to begin making payments, but has confirmed that it will begin to do so at the start of May.

David Hill, Director of Corporate Resources, said: “Payments will begin to be made to Bassetlaw residents from the beginning of May and if you already pay by Direct Debit, this process should be swift and straight forward. For residents who pay by other means, or in situations where the payment arrangements and the people registered at addresses do not match, or the circumstances may be a little more complex, we will process these as quickly as possible.

“I’d like to thank residents for their patience and as we will be paying out more than £7 million in rebates to Bassetlaw residents, there are also a number of checks and verifications that we need to make in order to prevent fraud or errors in payment."

Other Nottinghamshire councils have confirmed that they have started to make payments, mainly to people who pay by direct debit to begin with. Councillor David Martin, Cabinet Member for Finance on Ashfield District Council, said: “We are pleased that the first 25,600 Council Tax rebates for those that live in Bands A – D properties has now been paid.

“The Council has been working hard to ensure that we are in a position to pay this rebate out as quickly as possible. We’d like to thank residents for their patience. We hope to have made most payments by the end of May and are currently contacting all residents who are not on Direct Debit to arrange the payment.”

The deadline from central government to administer the payments is the end of September.
