Nottinghamshire chippy narrowly misses out on winning UK's best restaurant

A Nottinghamshire chippy has narrowly missed out on winning the crown at prestigious national awards. The Cod's Scallops in West Bridgford was one of five across the UK in the running for Restaurant of the Year.

The restaurant and takeaway, which have been open for less than a year at Wilford Lane Retail Park, was pipped to the post by Fish City in Belfast. The Cod's Scallops was the only Nottinghamshire chip shop to be shortlisted out of hundreds of applications in the National Fish & Chip Awards.

Owner John Molnar said: "It's an amazing achievement for us in a restaurant that is under 12 months old." He had been hoping to repeat the success of 2020 when the very first Cod's Scallops in Bramcote Lane, Wollaton, was named the UK champion.

The West Bridgford site has a 38-seater licensed restaurant with a vast menu offering up to 20 types of fish and shellfish such as salmon, monkfish, oysters, lobster and mussels. There's award-winning steak and Scale Ale pies plus all the usual chip shop favourites such as sausages, fishcakes, curry sauce and pickled eggs.

An added twist - and a bit of spice - comes from the Momma Bains range of samosas and veggie curries from two Michelin starred chef Sat Bains and his mum. Special occasions are always celebrated with unusual offerings such as battered haggis for Burns Night and battered sprouts and mince pies at Christmas. Soon deep-fried Creme Eggs will be served up for Easter.

The awards ceremony, hosted by the The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), took place at London's Park Plaza Westminster Bridge.

The Cod's Scallops also has restaurants in Carrington, Long Eaton in Derbyshire and Harborne, near Birmingham. A sixth in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, closed on February 7 due to problems with the site, rather than lack of custom. Mr Molnar has pledged to find an alterative site in the area.
