Nottinghamshire academy rated 'good' in first Ofsted inspection since converting

An academy in Calverton that had its first Ofsted inspection since converting into an academy has been rated 'good' by inspectors. Colonel Frank Seely Academy converted from a comprehensive school in 2017, and currently has 752 students aged between 11-and-18-years-old on its roll.

The academy on Flatts Lane was previously rated 'good' in March 2013 when it was a comprehensive, and has carried on that rating since it has joined the Redhill Academy Trust. Inspectors visited the academy on May 17 and May 18, with a report into their findings recently published.

Four areas of a school are inspected, with an additional fifth area if the school has a sixth-form, which Colonel Frank Seely Academy does. These are 'quality of education', 'behaviour and attitudes', 'personal development', 'leadership and management' and 'sixth-form provision', all of which in this case were rated 'good', giving an overall 'good' rating.

The report states: "There is a respectful culture at this school. Pupils told inspectors that teachers do not tolerate any form of bullying.

"More parents and carers are now choosing to send their children to this school. Most parents would recommend the school.

"Students in the sixth form are well supported to achieve highly in most subjects. They are well prepared for their next steps."

Jon Gale, headteacher, said: "I'm incredibly proud of the dedicated and inspiring staff body who work with our amazing students to make CFSA such a great place to learn, work and succeed. The report recognises the drive we have to ensure that every individual achieves their very best and develops the character traits needed to succeed in the rapidly changing world.

"As a school, we challenge ourselves to be the very best and whilst we celebrate the work we have achieved, we continue our work to ensure that Colonel Frank Seely is truly outstanding."

Inspectors visited lessons, looked at students' work and spoke to students, parents, teachers, leaders and governors. According to the report, a 'respectful culture' where students felt 'safe and happy' was observed, where staff were 'proud to work' and 'parents would recommend'.

Richard Pierpoint, executive headteacher, said: "Colonel Frank Seely Academy has made huge gains in the last four years. Waiting for the inspection, delayed due to Covid, was frustrating as we wanted to demonstrate these formally some time ago.

"The school is once again popular with parents, students work hard and the staff team are incredibly committed to everything they do. This report also recognises the contribution of Redhill Academy Trust which will continue to work with the academy on its journey to being an outstanding school.”

"Everyone should be proud of their achievements. It's onwards and upwards for Colonel Frank Seely Academy."
