Here is Friday's edition of The Nottinghamian:

Hello,

Friday's (October 28) edition of the Nottinghamian focuses on a couple in Arnold who have won a contract to supply Aldi with their excellent cakes and also what is happening around the city this weekend.

As it's Halloween weekend, we recommend some spooky activities to get involved in and, also, our restaurant recommendation is also frightfully good. With bonfire night fast approaching after Halloween, we also look at what events are happening around the city.

Aldi's 'Next Big Thing' judges 'blown away' by Arnold couple's Harrison and Griffiths Cakes

An Arnold couple were overjoyed after winning a massive contract to supply one of the UKs biggest supermarkets. Paulette Griffiths and Colin Harrison, of Harrison and Griffiths Cakes, appeared on Channel 4's Aldi's Next Big Thing, a show which gives small-scale food producers the chance to pitch their ideas for the chance of a lifetime.

Their winning Jamaican rum cakes are on sale as from Friday, October 28, just hours after the show was aired. The duo wowed the judges with their Jamaican rum cake on their way to winning the show and giving them a chance to get onto Aldi shelves. Colin and Paulette were selected after a Zoom meeting and invited to pitch in front of the cameras at Aldi's headquarters in Warwickshire.

Fireworks and bonfire night 2022 events in and around Nottingham and Nottinghamshire

The nights are drawing in and the temperatures are dropping which must mean bonfire night is fast approaching. It's been a while since we've had any major displays in Nottingham due to the pandemic but 2022 is shaping up to be a blast.

This year November 5 falls on a Saturday but events announced so far are spanning not just the weekend but starting as early as October 28. Our comprehensive listings will help you decide whether a small, community event is your thing, or one of the larger professionally organised events.

However, the annual display at the Forest Recreation Ground has been cancelled by Nottingham City Council as budget pressures continue to bite. The free event usually attracts a 40,000-strong crowd. The local authority said it had reluctantly taken the decision and that budget difficulties have been exacerbated by rising inflation, energy costs and other pressures.

Recommendation: Frightfully good Halloween food

Name: Liquid Light & Mocky D

Address: Unit 9, Robin Hood Industrial Estate, Alfred St South, Nottingham, NG3 1GE

Cuisine: Vegan street food

When it comes to choosing where to go for dinner this weekend, there are a few excellent choices. Halloween hits the city centre this weekend so there is no better time to try a spooky treat or two.

For some truly frightening fare, vegan favourites Mocky D have re-released their limited edition: Halloweener: 9" hot dogs complete with a reaper and ghost chilli, whiskey sauce. It also comes topped with sauerkraut as all good hotdogs should. The hot dog is just one item on the menu which also includes their signature burgers, kebabs and Sunday dinners.

You can find Mocky-D at the hidden gem pop-up bar that is Liquid Light Tap room on Alfred Street. There will be lots of haunted happenings at the venue to celebrate Halloween including a fancy dress competition, pumpkin carving and film screenings.
