Nottingham workers on Thane Road 'get abuse' from drivers over 'massive queues' due to roadworks

Workers carrying out important repairs on a busy road have opened up about 'getting abuse' from frustrated drivers. It comes as delays to traffic have been reported on Thane Road, near Boots headquarters and Lenton Industrial Estate, from February 7 until February 16 due to Cadent gas works.

Temporary traffic lights have been put in place on Thane Road, and Bull Close Road has been closed as a result. Nottingham City Transport said its passengers on the Navy 49 can expect ‘severe delays’.

But a worker on the site said working at the location while putting up with drivers has been "stressful". The worker, who did not wish to be named, said: "We got a lot of abuse here.

"We get a lot of people coming to us asking questions, and many of them are a bit disgruntled. Drivers shout at us as they go past."

He said that his team are as "efficient as possible" and that the works are important and sensitive. "We work with high voltage cables. It is important these works are being carried out for everyone's safety.

"We do not want to upset anyone, but these works could prevent fires for example so it would be very dangerous not to have them done. People think the power goes from house to house, but it is all in the grounds unfortunately.

"It is part of Britain's infrastructure. We are just trying to do our job and keep everyone safe."

He added: "We get stuck in traffic too when we travel here, also because there is no other way here. So we have to put up with our own roadworks.

"It is very stressful. We do not want to have accidents, but all of this is not helping."

Some drivers have talked about the "inconvenience". Neil Edwards, 38, who works at BCM Fareva, said: “The traffic lights have been a bit of a pain.

"It did take half an hour to get from Boots to the Clifton Bridge North bus stop on one of the first days, which was when it was worse. It’s not as bad now most of the time, we just had to get up a bit earlier and were a few minutes late the first couple of days.”

Sean Statham, 53, who works at DHL, said: “It’s a little bit of an inconvenience. The works just adds a couple of minutes. At about 2 o’clock there are massive queues but it’s only really that way when shifts end at 2 and 10. We have the new building gone at the same time, so that adds to it.”

A spokesperson for Cadent said: "Naturally, we understand that the current situation is frustrating and inconvenient to residents and road users, however we would reassure everybody that our staff are working hard to ensure that the works are completed as safely, and as quickly as possible and we thank people for their patience and understanding of that."
