Nottingham takeaway with mega breakfasts relocates so customers can eat in

A takeaway serving breakfasts, cobs and cakes has moved to new premises and is now operating as a cafe so customers have somewhere to sit down. Just days after closing the Sneinton site, Becky Wilson, who owns the business with her husband Mark, opened up on Carlton Hill.

The Bakery & Kitchen has seating for eight inside, including a cosy sofa. It still offers takeaway and delivery though. "It's been really good - basically full all day as well as doing take-outs. A lot of our customers were travelling from Carlton before and we now have the seating," said Becky, who is helped out by assistant Mandy Oldham, who has been with her virtually from the start of the business.

Everything is homemade or made to order. The menu revolves around getting the hungry people of Carlton off to good start for the day. The wide variety of breskfast cobs offers all combinations from egg and sausage, bacon and egg, scrambled egg, BLT, a vegetarian hash brown, beans and cheese combo and the Greek with grilled halloumi, mushrooms and red onion.

A mega breakfast lives up to its name, with three rashers of bacon, three sausages, two fried eggs, beans, mushrooms, hash brown and black pudding. "It costs £7.20 in the cafe. That's pretty popular and we get a lot of people ordering online, especially at weekends," said Becky, who first opened the Bakery in Sneinton Dale in 2016.

Smaller versions of the full English are served, plus a veggie breakfast with Quorn sausages and a vegan alternative minus the eggs. For customers trying to be healthier, porridge with a variety of toppings is available, alongside crumpets topped with beans and cheese, while chocolate chip brioche will appeal to anyone with a sweet-tooth.

Moving towards lunchtime jackets potatoes with toppings including vegan chilli are on the menu. Becky also serves cobs with all the traditional fillings of cheese, chicken, tuna mayo and ham, homemade soup (always vegetarian), and sausage rolls.

"We have a small selection of cakes at the moment. We are waiting for our cake fridge to be transported from the other premises and then we'll expand our range," said Becky.

"It a limited menu at the moment as we've just moved. Over the next few months we'll offer some more items like pancakes, maybe smoothies when the summer comes, and salads."

"We are just open until 1pm at the moment, but I’m hoping to maybe stay open for lunchtime in the future. As it gets busier I'm hoping to expand the hours."

Nothing is set in stone. Becky is open to suggestions from customers and hopes to be as accommodating as possible. On day one there was a request for soya milk so that will now be one of the options.

The business is based in what used to be Straight Six Cafe, a scheme to help ex offenders can qualifications in the kitchen. It closed after funding came to an end. Mark did all the painting and decorating to stamp the Bakery & Kitchen's own identity onto the premises.

There's a table outside but that side of the road doesn't get the sun until later in the day. "It's there for people to use if they want but it's not a big drawing point, unless we get a very nice summer that is. Fingers crossed," added Becky.
