Nottingham's Pub of the Year 2023 announced by CAMRA

A pub with 13 real ales has won the title of Nottingham CAMRA's Pub of the Year. The Horse & Jockey in Stapleford is no stranger to awards, having been a previous winner locally and a finalist in the national awards in 2013 and 2022.

Known locally as the Jockey, the pub was named the urban/city and overall winner by Nottingham's Campaign for Real Ale for the third year running. The free house's real ales include at least one mild or stout/porter, five of which are LocAle, brewed within 20 miles of the pub.

The split-level pub, in Nottingham Road, has wood burners, occasional live music and a weekly quiz which attracts a large gathering. It's also dog-friendly and provides doggy treats and water.

Nominated pubs are judged on a number of criteria, which includes beer quality, warmth of welcome and general mix of customers. The Horse and & Jockey now goes forward to be judged in the Nottinghamshire round of the competition.

Manager Paul Guilford: “We are very proud to receive this award for the third year running. All of us concerned with the Jockey work tirelessly to provide a great selection of ales and ciders, a welcoming atmosphere and a keenness to provide a service people will enjoy and wish to visit us again”

Nottingham CAMRA branch chairman Steve Westby said: "This lively free house is again a deserved winner of this competition. The award recognises the choice of thirteen well kept real ales, many of them from local breweries, served in a welcoming friendly, comfortable, atmosphere."

Second place in the urban category went to Byron’s Rest in Hucknall, with the Crown in Beeston third. CAMRA also announced the winner in the village category and overall runner-up - the Round Robinn, a micro pub in East Leake.

The pub, which opened in 2015, serves six local beers on gravity. The comfortable seating is a mixture of chairs, cushioned benches and high stools, in a single room with space for 45 drinkers. Continental bottled beers are available as are three craft keg beers and bar snacks.

Taking second place in the village category was the Old Green Dragon in Oxton, with the Air Hostess at Tollerton third.
