Nottingham's frustration over 'unfair' new energy price cap confirmed by Ofgem

People across Nottingham have told of their frustration over 'unfair' soaring bills as a new energy cap increase will put millions of homes under pressure. It means households will see bills soar by £1,578 a year on average.

It comes as energy regulator Ofgem has announced the new price cap rise to £3,549, up from £1,971. People across the city said the new prices will not be "sustainable".

Social media users have hit back at the new price cap on Nottinghamshire Live's Facebook page, with Jenni Harding adding: "This is not fair, sustainable or possible. All households would need a big increase in pay and/or benefits and pensions to pay this.

"So would businesses and all other industries, farms and fishing fleets, railways, hospitals and hospitality industries to name a few. It is simply unaffordable."

Simon Lovatt said: "Not be long before I cut down the telegraph poles to make a fire to heat my house", and Ann Edwards added: "Better get some funding from somewhere for the homeless. There won’t be enough shop doorways for us all."

Peter Tozer added: "Not going to be long before the cost to fuel the house you live in costs more than the house you live in."

From October 1, families are expected to be faced with an annual rise of 80 per cent - and record high bills. What's more, there are major concerns that bills will go up again come January 2023.

It is the first three-month price cap. Now, pressure is also mounting on the next Prime Minister to do something about the devastating cost of living crisis, with Labour calling for more to be done. Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves stated that "This announcement is going to strike fear into the hearts of families up and down the country."
