Nottingham pub's 'unique and special' beer garden named one of the best in England

When it's hot, hordes of thirsty punters flock for an alfresco pint outside Nottingham's Canalhouse pub. Locals know what a hotspot it is as it regularly appears in Nottinghamshire Live's round-ups of best beer gardens. So does the rest of the country now after it was named one of England's top 25 beer gardens.

The annual list is compiled by Big 7 Travel to celebrate the long summer days, and even longer summer nights. The ranking system covers everything from ambience and scenery to food and drink, making it an invaluable resource for anyone looking to enjoy a drink in the sun.

The pub, with scenic canalside views off Canal Street, comes in 20th place, with the following citation: "Lots of pubs boast waterfront views, but Canalhouse is probably the only pub that can claim to have a canal running right through the centre of it, complete with resident narrow boats and a footbridge.

"And if that’s not enough, the pub also offers a large outdoor seating area set against the backdrop of the water. The beers, which are brewed in Nottingham at Castle Rock, are every bit as good as the views, too. Try the Harvest Pale, which was crowned the Supreme Champion Beer of Britain. There’s a full menu of wine, spirits, real cider and soft drinks, as well as locally roasted coffee from Stewarts of Trent Bridge on the menu too."

The honour came as a surprise to the owners and staff who didn't know the pub had made the list. General manager Wayne Harvey said: “The Canalhouse beer garden comes alive over the summer. It’s on the beaten track so it’s easy to get to but it’s tucked away, nestled between the pub (formerly a canal museum), and the canal itself.

"This time of year the garden is in full bloom and looking beautiful. We don’t take bookings out there, so it’s first come, first served but there’s loads of seating.

"During the pandemic when everyone had to sit outside whatever the weather, a lot of investment went into the space. So now as well as having overhead cover which lets the sun through but keeps the rain out, there are patio heaters and lots of twinkly lights. It’s a really unique and special space.”

One of the highlights is the Waterfront Festival which returns on Saturday, July 1. There will be more than 25 live performances from acts like Seas of Mirth, Femur and Bloodworm and this year's fancy dress competition has a 'naughty nautical' theme. The event is raising funds for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People and Tara’s Angels.

Big 7 Travel, which brands itself as the ultimate guide to all things travel related, added: "This list isn't just for beer enthusiasts. It's also a great way to support local businesses and explore new places. So whether you're a seasoned beer connoisseur or just looking for a fun day out with friends, these are the best beer gardens to visit in England."
