Nottingham neighbours fear they are missing post as major gas works closes road

Residents living opposite major gas work in Nottingham have said they fear they are not getting some post delivered due to traffic disruption. Cadent Gas is currently carrying out work in Derby Road, partially closing the route until March.

The outbound stretch, between Queen's Medical Centre and Priory Island, is closed for an estimated three weeks. The A52 Derby Road inbound is also down to one lane.

The works have contributed to traffic disruption across the city, with some taxi drivers saying it has been the worst they have ever seen. Now residents of Adams Hill, a quiet road that runs adjacent to Derby Road, have spoken about the works' impact on them.

David Edward, 45, told Nottinghamshire Live it was inconvenient and questioned why he and other residents were not able to access their road from the QMC roundabout. Instead, they are required to take the long way round.

“It’s inconvenient, one of the concerns is how long it’s going to go on for," he said. “The work is going on half a mile away. It’s all very good for the first half of January because the roads aren’t as busy but my fear is they will go on for much longer."

“We know it’s got to be done but why can’t they let us get in and out? There’s a lot of medical people down here who go between here and Queen’s Medical Centre. It’s got to be a couple of miles extra. Although it doesn’t sound much, if you want to nip out it’s a bit of a problem."

Aamna Malik, a 21-year-old student, said some post was not getting delivered to her home due to the works. “I don’t drive so it doesn’t really affect me, but when my parents go into the city or pick my sister up from school it probably takes up to an extra hour during rush hour," she said.

"I notice post people don’t come too so we’re missing out on post. They don’t think it’s accessible.”

Another resident, David Atkinson, added: “I’ve lived here for 44 years and as far as I remember the road has always remained open for access to Adams Hill. All we do is add more traffic to University Boulevard and Wollaton, increasing the strain on the roads."

A spokesperson for Cadent, which replacing 2,000 metres of mains gas pipes, previously said: "Of course, we understand the disruption that the works will cause to road users, residents and visitors, but we thank everybody for their patience and we want to assure everyone that our priority is carrying out these essential works as safely, and as quickly as possible.

"In the interim, we urge road users to allow extra time for their journeys, or use alternative routes wherever possible." The company has been approached for further comment.
