Nottingham heatwave prompts 'only drive when essential' warning as temperatures set to soar

People in Nottingham have been urged to only drive 'where it's essential' this weekend as temperatures could reach 29C. The city will be hotter than many holiday destinations including Ibiza as a heatwave hits.

The warm spell is expected to see temperatures rise quite rapidly on Saturday, June 10 - prompting the UKHSA to upgrade its heat health alert to amber. The Met Office has also issued a yellow weather warning for Saturday, too, with the sharp rise in temperatures possibly triggering thunderstorms.

Nottingham City Council has now issued a number of warnings, including advising people to avoid driving. It has also warned against people swimming in the River Trent.

In a tweet, the authority said: "It's going to be a hot one in Nottingham, especially tomorrow. Remember sun cream and a hat if you're out in the hottest part of the day and especially for children and older people.

"Air pollution is worse when the weather is hot - only drive where it's essential and always turn off your engine when not moving

"Walk dogs earlier in the morning or later in the evening. Drink plenty of water - remember the refill scheme if you're out and about in the city centre.

"Never swim in the Trent - many healthy, fit young people have lost their lives after going in to cool down."
