Former Nottingham Forest loanee Jack Colback is “likely” to find himself back in Newcastle United’s reserves this summer.
The midfielder is sure to be on the Reds’ wanted list during the transfer window, following an impressive season on loan at the City Ground.
Boss Martin O’Neill has spoken of his plans to hold talks with the 29-year-old, while the player himself has said he doesn’t see his future at St James’ Park, having been frozen out under Rafael Benitez.
Colback has been forced to train with the Magpies’ Under-23s in the past, before he first joined Forest on loan in January 2018.
And the Newcastle Chronicle report that is likely to be the case again when he reports back to the club for pre-season training.
They say Henri Saivet, Rolando Aarons and Achraf Lazaar, who have also been out on loan and are still under contract, could find themselves in the same boat.
“The likelihood is all four could start life back at the club in the reserves under the watch of new second string boss Neil Redfearn,” the report states.
“Should Rafa Benitez stay on as manager he will look to offload the majority of returning loanees, but by the same token there are some players watching with interest to see if a new boss comes and gives them a second chance.”
Newcastle manager Benitez’s future is seemingly up in the air amid a potential takeover of the club, with the Spaniard’s contract due to expire in a matter of weeks.
The Chronicle add the situation “is delaying decisions from being taken regarding transfers and the future of individuals within the United squad”.
Colback, who made 39 appearances in the Garibaldi last term, has previously said: “I don’t see my future at Newcastle.
“I’ve not played there for a good two years now. The manager there made it clear I wasn’t in his plans at that time, and that’s not going to change.”
