Nottingham Forest can believe that securing Champions League football is a realistic goal for this season after a 1-0 victory over Manchester United on the Premier League’s return.
The hosts struck early in the game through Anthony Elanga, the former Man Utd winger, who broke clear in the opening minutes and scored from a counter-attack. He shrugged off Alejandro Garnacho, cut inside of Noussair Mazraoui then slotted the ball home.
From there, Ruben Amorim’s men actually impressed as the searched for an equaliser but they lacked a cutting edge in the final third which has been a recurring theme of their season.
At the depth, with Forest managing the game well, Harry Maguire was introduced as a target man and almost stole an equaliser but Murillo denied him with a goalline clearance. Forest maintain their grip on third place and move one step closer to Europe’s top competition.

Anthony Elanga reminds Manchester United of lesson they continuously fail to learn
23:09 , Mike JonesA post-mortem of any Manchester United defeat throws up a whole host of ailments of which there is no clear panacea.
Yet, one common deficiency appears time and again, week after week. Only this time, it took a forward deemed not good enough to really emphasise the point.
Anthony Elanga’s fifth-minute winner, having ran 85 metres, mostly unchallenged, will garner all the headlines, for good reason, as Nottingham Forest took another giant leap towards returning to European football's top table for the first time in 45 years with victory over a beleaguered United.

Anthony Elanga reminds Manchester United of lesson they continuously fail to learn
Ruben Amorim speaking to TNT Sports:
22:47 , Mike Jones"We controlled the game, but we already knew this team can score goals out of nothing. When they scored we changed the game a little bit from what they want. We tried with good opportunities, but in the last third, the last pass, the last assist wasn't there. Then if we don't have that we cannot score goals.
"This season is like that. We had a lot of shots on goal, we pushed the opponent to the last third, but in the last third we had a lack of quality. We need to win games and we deserved more in this game, that is clear, but it is our fault and we need to be better in the last third. We should have won this game, not even drawn, but in the end we have lost three points.
"We know the characters of the team and one goal can put them in one situation they love. We have to score two goals to win a match and that is frustrating as it was the beginning of the game. We helped them to win three points."
Anthony Elanga reacts to Forest's win:
22:42 , Mike Jones"It is about attacking the space and getting to the opposite goal as quick as I can. I saw the space and I believe I'm one of the fastest players in the league. The finish is something I have been trying to work on. Left foot or right foot, I am quite comfortable with both feet this season.
"All you want to do is keep on improving, coming here is about playing and developing. I appreciate Manchester United so much as I learned a lot there. I am enjoying my football and I want to keep on going.
"We have one of the lowest possession in the league, but it has been effective and it is something we have worked on since pre-season. Murillo's block means more than a goal, seeing it on the bench I was like 'Wow'.”
Can Forest make it to the Champions League
22:31 , Mike JonesRyan Yates said: "I don't want to say as football is so cruel. We have got the cup to focus on and we have got the league.
"We are at Villa Park Saturday and they're flying. We take each game as it comes."
Yates on Elanga:
22:26 , Mike Jones"He is a dream for a midfielder. Especially us sitting in that low-block - you can give him the ball and he does the rest."
Nottingham Forest captain Ryan Yates:
22:25 , Mike Jones"Special, after a massive performance.
"120 minutes the other day - it is unbelievable. The determination, fans were incredible and buzzing to keep the run going. We're having a great season. The past two seasons were about staying up, keeping our head above water, and we have got that momentum at the minute."

The two Manchester United players handing Ruben Amorim an awkward dilemma
19:30 , Richard JollyThe good news, to use Ruben Amorim’s phrase, was that two of the forwards on Manchester United’s books have hit form. Not for United, admittedly.
Marcus Rashford scored twice in an FA Cup quarter-final, has earned an England recall and has his current club manager saying he is getting back towards his best. Although that manager, tellingly, is Unai Emery of Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, Antony has starred in a side who have reeled off five straight league wins. Though the division in question is LaLiga and the club in form is Real Betis.

They ended a run of seven games without a victory at the City Ground last season.

Nottingham Forest’s fairytale season continues with penalty shootout triumph at Brighton

Will Man Utd's loan players return?
18:25 , Mike JonesMarcus Rashford and Antony have been sent out on loan and are excelling for their new clubs.
Ruben Amorim was asked whether the two players will return at the end of the season or if their loans will be made permanent.
He replied: “I know Rashford really well and everybody knows the talent that he has. So I already spoke about that. He’s a top player, if he wants. So I'm not surprised.
“And like I said, it's the same with Antony, it's a good thing. We see our players doing well on loan in a different context. That can happen and it's a good sign for the club.”
Forest hit record revenues
18:20 , Mike JonesNottingham Forest have generated £100m from player sales meaning they have recorded a profit for the latest set of accounts.
For the year ending June 30, 2024, Forest recorded an operating loss of £73.3m.
However, before tax that is a profit of £12.1m after interest and the £100m from transfers - described as “profit on disposal of players”.
Those figures compare to a £59.6m operating loss for the previous year.
Forest also had record revenues of £189.6m up from £154.8m in 2023.
Morgan Gibbs-White to be assessed
18:15 , Mike JonesMorgan Gibbs-White will be assessed to see if he is able to feature in tonight’s match after a heavy collision with the post during the weekend’s FA Cup win over Brighton.
"We are going to assess him," said Nuno Espirito Santo. "He had a big contact against the post. His leg was not okay and he was struggling."
How possession became a dangerous game in the Premier League
18:10 , Mike JonesPossession is defined as “having, owning or controlling” and perhaps that last word best sums up the philosophy in football: if you have possession, you have control. “Maybe one day they will change the rules,” Pep Guardiola once said with a smile. “But I think to score a goal you need the ball.”
Yet in the Premier League this season there is growing evidence that the teams who really have control are the ones without the ball. They are the ones lulling their opponents into a false sense of security, who can pickpocket at any moment, who can turn a tackle on the halfway line into a shot on target in seconds.

Will Chris wood be available?
18:05 , Mike JonesForest host Manchester United tonight but asked if Chris Wood could be available, Nuno said: “I cannot answer that.
“I don’t know, I’m not sure. It is going to be day by day.”

Chris Wood ‘not good’ after picking up hip injury
18:00 , Mike JonesNottingham Forest’s manager Nuno Espirito Santo provided a gloomy injury update on top scorer Chris Wood.
The Reds were without Wood on Saturday when they beat Brighton on penalties to reach the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time in 34 years.
The striker suffered a hip injury on international duty with New Zealand, and the boss said his condition is “not good”.
“Let’s wait and see,” he added. “It is going to be day by day we have to assess him.
“It is all about the pain he has. It was a big impact on his hip and it is very painful.
“We have to assess him. We are gutted that Chris was not here with us.”
Amorim on importance of Bruno Fernandes
17:55 , Mike Jones“I think he’s so important for this team,” Amorim said of his capatin. “And you can see it by the numbers, and you can see from these last games, he’s always the guy that scores.
“It’s not the most important thing, it’s not the only thing, but he’s always there.
“When you play for this team, you have to be prepared for the critics and I understand that former players had a lot of success here and the standards for them were so high that they see the things like that sometimes as black and white.
“In life sometimes it’s not just black and white, there is some other colours and you have to understand the context.
“Again, he’s always there, trying his best, so I’m really proud to coach a player like him.”
Ruben Amorim urges Roy Keane and other critics to enjoy Bruno Fernandes
17:50 , Mike JonesRuben Amorim has told former Manchester United players criticising captain Bruno Fernandes to stop seeing his performances in “black and white” and appreciate the colours that paint the overall picture.
The 30-year-old has often been the lightning rod during poor performances or patches, with former skipper Roy Keane fuming “talent is not enough” as he tore into his leadership.

Injury updates on Shaw and Mainoo
17:45 , Mike JonesThe Red Devils will still be without Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo as they recvoer from injury but the signs are promising that the two players will be back in the squad soon.
Ruben Amorim said: “Luke is not ready yet. We are starting doing some drills with the team but we are building Luke.
“Kobbie is almost returning but he is not ready for this game.”
Heaven's injury is 'not so serious'
17:40 , Mike JonesManchester United’s teenage defender Ayden Heaven will miss tonight’s game after suffering an ankle problem in the 3-0 win over Leicester.
Ruben Amorim allayed any fears the he will be a long-term absentee.
The head coach said: “It was not so serious. He’s recovering, he’s not ready to play but he’s going to return this season, for sure.”

Rashford's form is good for Man utd says Amorim
17:35 , Richard JollyRuben Amorim insisted that Marcus Rashford’s return to form is good news for Manchester United.
Rashford earned an England recall after a year out of the international picture and started twice for new manager against Thomas Tuchel before opening his Aston Villa account with a double in Sunday's 3-0 win over Preston in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
And Amorim said: “Rashford is not my player at the moment but every player that performs well on loan is good news for my club so I am happy with that.”
The Marcus Rashford gamble that leaves Aston Villa with four outcomes
17:30 , Mike JonesUnai Emery’s answer was a non-answer. But, designed to be concealing, it was also revealing. Would Aston Villa take up their £40m option to buy Marcus Rashford? “We don’t want to waste time speaking about it,” the manager replied. And yet he had also outlined the various scenarios that alter the equation.
“If we are in the Champions League, if we are in the Europa League, if we are in the European Conference League or not in Europe or winning a trophy, it is completely different,” Emery said.

Nottingham Forest vs Man Utd Prediction
17:25 , Mike JonesRuben Amorim continues to build his Manchester United side but they have been in turmoil throughout this Premier League campaign. Back to back wins, against Real Sociedad and Leicester City, will give them confidence but Nottingham Forest are better drilled and have home advantage.
Nuno Espirito Santo will know that a win tonight massively improves his team’s chances of reaching the Champions League and Forest’s FA Cup quarter-final victory over Brighton will give them enough of a boost to get the job done.
Forest 1-0 Man Utd.
Man Utd's early team news
17:20 , Mike JonesManchester United welcome back five players with Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton all available for selection. Shaw doesn’t seem quite ready despite returning to training so it will be unlikely that he features but Ruben Amorim will no doubt benefit from the defensive reinforcements of Maguire and Yoro.
Patrick Dorgu has now served a suspension and will also be in the squad, but Lisandro Martinez, Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo, Ayden Heaven and Jonny Evans are definitely out of the fixture.
Predicted Man Utd XI: Onana; De Ligt, Maguire, Yoro; Dalot, Fernandes, Ugarte, Dorgu; Garnacho, Hojlund, Zirkzee
Forest's early team news
17:15 , Mike JonesChris Wood is a major doubt for the match after picking up a hip issue on international duty with New Zealand. Morgan Gibbs-White will also be assessed after his collision with the post during the FA Cup match against Brighton with the manager feeling he should be fine to play.
