Nottingham Forest vs Man City LIVE: Premier League result and final score as Callum Hudson-Odoi fires late winner in top-four clash

Hudson-Odoi celebrates as Forest defeated Man City 1-0 - (REUTERS)

Callum Hudson-Odoi scored a late winner as Nottingham Forest beat Manchester City in the Premier League to take a huge step towards securing Champions League football next season.

The winger brought down Morgan Gibbs-White’s brilliant cross-field pass and finished past Ederson at the Manchester City goalkeeper’s near post, as Forest strengthened their hold on third place in the table.

In a game of few chances, Pep Guardiola's City team came closest when Nico Gonzalez's long-range shot scraped the outside of the post, while Hudson-Odoi saw a curled effort pushed onto the post by Ederson.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are now four points clear of fourth-placed City, and seven ahead of sixth-placed Newcastle, with the top five teams in the Premier League qualifying for European football’s elite competition next season.

Pep Guardiola refuses to blame Ederson as Man City face fight for Champions League spot

17:42 , Jamie Braidwood

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says Champions League qualification will not fall from the sky for them after a damaging defeat at Nottingham Forest.

City were beaten 1-0 at the City Ground after Callum Hudson-Odoi caught goalkeeper Ederson out at the near post in the 82nd minute.

It was their ninth defeat of the season, the most since 2019/20, and leaves them looking over their shoulder in the top-four race, with Forest strengthening their own position with a famous win.

Guardiola says his side will have to “win a lot of matches” to get back in the premier European competition next season and that qualification will not be gifted to them.

Nottingham Forest take huge step towards Champions League football with famous Man City win

14:58 , Jamie Braidwood

Callum Hudson-Odoi’s late goal saw Nottingham Forest take a huge step towards Champions League qualification with a 1-0 win over Manchester City, who are now looking over their shoulder.

Hudson-Odoi caught Ederson out at the near post in the 82nd minute at the City Ground to provide a new highlight in a memorable campaign for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.

They consolidated their position in third with 10 games to go, four points ahead of City in fourth and five ahead of Chelsea in fifth.

And the manner of their victory will surely give Forest huge belief they can finish the job and qualify for the Champions League in just their third season back in the top flight.

City’s own European qualification hopes are very much up in the air as they fell to a ninth league defeat, the most since 2019/20, and they could be out of the top four after the weekend’s action.

BREAKTHROUGH AT LAST AND WHAT A GOAL FROM FOREST!

The pass from Gibbs-White is sensational! Left from right, a booming ball from the captain is brought down perfectly from Hudson-Odoi, who drives into the box.

City back off and Hudson-Odoi shoots at Ederson’s near post. It’s awful goalkeeping from Ederson and he’s far too easily beaten, but a lovely move from Forest.

And what an important goal that could be in the Champions League qualification race, as well.

Stuart Pearce in 'great spirits' after health scare

13:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Former England international Stuart Pearce is in “great spirits” in hospital after suffering a health scare on a flight from Las Vegas, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

“I spoke to him yesterday, he’s in great spirits,” TalkSport commentator Sam Matterface said ahead of the commentary between Nottingham Forest and Manchester City - two of Pearce’s former clubs.

“He isn’t 100 per cent, that is definitely the case, but he is in the right place, he is in the hospital. They are dealing with it.”

Encouraging news.

For City, there were half-chances for Haaland, Foden and Bernardo, but they failed to trouble Sels. Doku and Nico were closer from range, with the midfielder rattling the outside of the post

Forest have largely been on the back foot but Wood had half an opportunity from a long punt upfield, but he couldn’t beat Ederson with the attempted lob.

Not a classic. Goalless at the break.

Nottingham Forest 0-0 Man City

13:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Nottingham Forest 0-0 Man City

12:53 , Jamie Braidwood

19 mins: Not too much quality on display so far. Gibbs-White turned down the chance to cross from the set-piece and from the second attempt his delivery is blocked.

15 mins: CHANCE! Hudson-Odoi clips a cross into Wood but the ball squirms away from the in-form striker.

Moments before, Haaland also let a ball run away from him in the Forest box. It’s been a fairly scrappy start so far.

Nottingham Forest 0-0 Man City

12:46 , Jamie Braidwood

13 mins: POST! Wow! What a hit from Nico Gonzalez! Forest back off the midfielder and Nico is able to look up and take aim at goal.

The midfielder hits it so sweetly, with the rising effort clipping the outside of the Forest post and going behind.

Selz was scrambling and Nico holds his head. Forest won’t be giving him that much room again.

Nottingham Forest 0-0 Man City

12:42 , Jamie Braidwood

9 mins: Forest have dropped very deep, which is exactly how Nuno’s side like to play when out of possession. Savinho and Doku will be key for City today but Savinho throws up his arms as Dias hits a crossfield switch out of play.

Nottingham Forest 0-0 Man City

Pep Guardiola looks forward to Nottingham Forest match

12:21 , Jamie Braidwood

Pep Guardiola says there is “nothing” he can take from December’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest, which came amid his side’s winless run.

“You cannot compare,” he tells TNT Sport. On facing Nottingham Forest, he says they are a “top side” and are where they deserve to be with 11 games to go.

“Everyone knows the quality of Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden. Of course it’s important to win today, we want to be in the Champions League, but there are great contenders.

“Liverpool were not in the Champions League two years ago and look at them now. Are we going to try? Absolutely.”

Stuart Pearce played over 400 games for Nottingham Forest and is fondly remembered at Manchester City too having played for and managed the Sky Blues.

Pearce is recovering in hospital in Canada after the flight he was on was forced to divert its course and make an emergency landing.

Jack Grealish back on the bench for Man City

12:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Jack Grealish was back in the headlines last night after being spotted buying drinks on a night out last weekend - although the Manchester City star was not breaking any rules having been given the day off.

Pep Guardiola was still asked about the England international in his pre-match press conference and the manager said he is more concerned with what he does on the pitch. Grealish is on the bench today.

“A day off is a day off, there is no training. They have private lives to do whatever they want. I’m not going to control what they do in their private life,” Guardiola said.

“I judge what I see on the pitch, the training sessions and the performances in the game. That’s where I judge the players.

“I want Jack at his best, of course, but he’s had setbacks and didn’t play. That was sometimes for the injuries, he could not get the rhythm that you need for being ready every three days.

“Jack played really good the last game and hopefully he can have the consistency.”

Nuno on Nottingham Forest getting back to 'basics'

11:44 , Jamie Braidwood

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo said he wanted his team to get “back to basics” after the 4-3 defeat at Newcastle and was pleased with what he saw in the 0-0 against Arsenal.

He tells TNT Sports: “I think we showed what we are as a team. We were solid and compact. After what happened before, it was important to go back to that.”

Forest finished 58 points behind Manchester City last season but are chasing Champions League football now and come into today’s match one point above Pep Guardiola’s side.

“I like the commitment to improve, to work as a team. To realise how bad we did before and how we want to improve and work now. I’m impressed with the unity and atmosphere.”

Phil Foden preferred to Omar Marmoush for Man City

11:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Perhaps a slight surprise for Manchester City as Omar Marmoush drops out of the starting line-up. Phil Foden is set to play behind Erling Haaland, with the Egyptian on the bench.

Speaking of, City’s bench is looking very strong, with Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Ilkay Gundogan and Mateo Kovacic joining Marmoush to give Guardiola several options to change the game.

While City are down to the bare bones in defence, with Matheus Nunes continuing at right back and Ruben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov continuing their recent partnership.

Pep Guardiola: Jack Grealish can enjoy a night out but must deliver on the pitch

11:05 , Jamie Braidwood

Pep Guardiola insisted he had no issue with Jack Grealish enjoying a night out – but warned he must deliver on the pitch for Manchester City.

Pictures emerged this week of the England international apparently visiting a number of venues in the north east – including a social club where he reportedly bought drinks for the locals – last weekend.

Grealish was not breaking any club rules, with the squad having been given two days off following Saturday’s FA Cup fifth-round win over Plymouth.

Yet the stories have led some to question the 29-year-old’s professionalism amid what has been a difficult campaign both for him and the team.

Pep Guardiola: Jack Grealish can enjoy a night out but must deliver on the pitch

Pep Guardiola explains the strengths of Nottingham Forest

10:51 , Jamie Braidwood

"If you are third in the table after 8-10 fixtures, that's OK - but if it happens with 11 games left, and still you are third, it is because you have done really, really, really well.

"You cannot be there for many months without doing many good things. So it's impressive, I would say.

"They defend really well, aggressive, compact and good in the transitions. They are good with the long balls and the four up front are really good. They create many things."

'Not the end of the world' if Man City fail to qualify for Champions League

10:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Currently fourth, Manchester City face a crunch test as they travel to third-placed Nottingham Forest, who have been one of the competition's surprise packages this term.

Behind them the battle is also tight, with 10th-placed Aston Villa just five points adrift, and Guardiola is realistic about his team's position.

Pep Guardiola said: "It will not be the end of the world if we're not going to qualify for the Champions League.

"If it doesn't happen, it's because we have not been good enough and the other teams deserve it. After 38 fixtures, it's fair enough. The result is finished.

"We are in the position that is not ideal, but it's not too bad. It's in our hands and we're going to fight for that."

Man City dealt Nathan Ake blow

10:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Manchester City defender Nathan Ake is expected to be out for up to 11 weeks following foot surgery, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

The centre-back was forced off at half-time in last weekend's FA Cup victory over Plymouth and later underwent an operation to repair a fracture.

It is the latest in a series of fitness issues in a frustrating campaign for the Dutchman, with the foot issue having been particularly troublesome for some time.

Guardiola said at a press conference: "Ten weeks, 11 weeks (out), they said to me. When you go for surgery it's because something wrong happened.

"But the important thing is it is done. He has struggled a lot this season with the problems in his feet. It happens."

Predicted line-ups

Nottingham Forest XI: Sels; Aina, Milenkovic, Murillo, Williams; Anderson, Yates; Elanga, Gibbs-White, Hudson-Odoi; Wood

Good morning

Nottingham Forest host Manchester City in a key contest in the Premier League top-four race.

While City have fallen away from title contention, Forest have surged up the table under Nuno Espirito Santo to sit above Pep Guardiola’s side in the table.

But while Forest are hanging onto third position, Nuno’s team have not won since beating Brighton 7-0 last month - requiring penalties to beat Exeter and Ipswich in the FA Cup and losing to Fulham and Newcastle before drawing 0-0 with Arsenal in the Premier League.

City - who won 3-0 in the reverse fixture earlier this season - defeated Tottenham 1-0 in their last Premier League outing as Guardiola’s side look to salvage their campaign by finishing in the top four and winning the FA Cup, where they face Bournemouth in the quarter-finals.
