Taiwo Awoniyi transfer latest as Nottingham Forest target edges closer to record deal

Nottingham Forest transfer target Taiwo Awoniyi has reportedly said goodbye to his Union Berlin teammates as his move to the City Ground edges closer.

The 24-year-old has been at the Bundesliga side since September 2020 when he joined from Liverpool originally on loan, before signing for Die Eisemen permanently last summer for £6.5 million. After scoring 25 goals in 65 games for the German outfit, Awoniyi has been linked with a move to the Premier League with Steve Cooper's side.

Awoniyi has a release clause of €20m (£17.5m) and has been linked with a move to the East Midlands after his impressive season with Union. The striker struggled in England during his time with the Reds, failing to register an appearance while with Jurgen Klopp's side.

Now, according to German media outlet BZ Berlin, the Nigerian striker has said goodbye to his teammates at the club's training ground prior to the start of a training session, before leaving the Alte Forsterei with a suitcase at 10:05am. The German outlet also stated that Awoniyi is in talks with the Reds ahead of a move this summer window and is 'expected' to sign this week.

The deal would earn the forward's former club an extra £2m due to a clause added to the deal when he left the Merseyside side. The presence of a 10 per cent sell-on fee which, according to our colleagues at Liverpool Echo, was negotiated last summer.

Cooper is on the hunt of a new striker to replace Keinan Davis after his loan spell from Aston Villa expired. Lewis Grabban and Sam Surridge are the Reds' only strikers at the moment and Awoniyi would likely take the starting place come the first game of the season against Newcastle United.
