Nottingham Forest transfer stance explained after Dean Henderson injury blow

Adding a goalkeeper to their January shopping list has been a “discussion point” for Nottingham Forest following an injury to Dean Henderson.

The 25-year-old is expected to be out of action for at least the next month after suffering a thigh injury in last Saturday’s 2-0 win over Leicester City. Fellow summer signing Wayne Hennessey will replace him between the posts for the weekend’s trip to Bournemouth, with Jordan Smith as back-up.

Hennessey was already set to step in for the upcoming two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester United, with Henderson unable to play against his parent club. But with the latter facing a significant period out of action, the Reds are understood to be looking to bring in another shot-stopper before the transfer window closes.

“He’s going to be out for four to five weeks, which is obviously a bit of a blow for all of us - him especially,” head coach Steve Cooper said of Henderson. But these things happen.

“We carry on with our work and will support Dean as best we can to get fit as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we have to concentrate on getting ready for games.

“Wayne is the most experienced player in the squad. He is not someone we have to worry about in terms of preparation. He is such a professional, he prepares for every game as if he is going to start anyway. That won't change, too much.

“He will play on Saturday, so his mind will be a little bit different. But he has got so much experience at club and international level that we really back him to do well for us. It has been business as usual in terms of the preparation.”

Asked whether the club will look to sign another keeper in the wake of Henderson’s injury, Cooper added: “It is certainly a discussion point. After the weekend, we have two League Cup games that Dean wouldn’t have played in anyway, because of the loan ruling, so we were always planning without him for those games. We just need to get this weekend out of the way and see where we’re at after that.

“Dean is going to be out for four to five weeks, which is obviously a blow for all of us, especially him, but these things happen and we carry on with our work and support Dean to get fit as quickly as possible. In the meantime we have to focus on getting ready for games.”
