Nottingham Forest transfer could lead to exit as club 'considering' move for forgotten forward

French side SM Caen are reportedly "considering" re-signing Nottingham Forest centre-forward Nuno Da Costa after he impressed on loan in Ligue 2 last season.

The former Cape Verde international spent last season on loan in Normandy and scored 10 goals across all competitions as Caen finished seventh in the second tier. That temporary exit came on the back of a similar stint in the Belgium top flight with Mouscron during the 2020/21 season.

Da Costa made just a single appearance for the Reds last season, coming on as a second-half substitute in the second round Carabao Cup tie against Bradford City at the City Ground to replace now-Olympiacos player Philip Zinckernagel. That 40-minute run out was just 31-year-old's 13th appearance for Forest since signing from RC Strasbourg in January 2020.

The club-record signing of Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi is only expected to further reduce any hopes of first-team minutes for Da Costa following their promotion to the Premier League. With the forward's future in the East Midlands looking bleak, Ouest-France (via Sport Witness ) are reporting that Caen are "considering" coming back in for the player permanently.

Da Costa's current contract is set to expire next season, which it suggest that while Forest coming to an agreement of ending that contract early would "financially" be "complicated", it is an option that "remains on the table". The French outlet adds that the player is waiting to return to the club for pre-season when it is expected the "club's intentions towards him" will be made clear.

As things stand, Da Costa is "waiting to resume with Forest to clearly see the club’s intentions towards him". A departure, though, appears likely, but Caen are said to be "exploring other avenues" in the meantime.
