Nottingham Forest ‘tracking’ Sydney van Hooijdonk transfer after prolific season

Nottingham Forest are reported to be tracking a remarkable move for striker Sydney van Hooijdonk.

The Heerenveen forward, on loan from Bologna, has bagged 16 goals in 32 games this season. Van Hooijdonk, the son of former Forest man Pierre, has enjoyed his return to the Eredivisie after a short stint in Italy, producing 23 goals in 47 games for the Dutch club since his initial spell in January 2022.

The 23-year-old looks to have inherited his father’s goalscoring instincts, with Van Hooijdonk Sr. scoring 36 times in 71 games during his time with Forest, helping return the club to the top-flight in 1999. Despite not being born when his Dad was scoring goals at the City Ground, Sydney demonstrated his family’s feelings towards the club, being in attendance when Steve Cooper ’s side achieved promotion at Wembley last season.

The Athletic has reported that the Reds are “looking at” a move for Van Hooijdonk Jr., who began his career at NAC Breda before moving to Bologna in 2021. The striker is claimed to have been “scouted” by the club as they assess their options for the upcoming transfer window.

Van Hooijdonk is currently in a rich vein of form, scoring seven in his last six league games. The Netherlands u21 intenational made just four league appearances for Bologna in Serie A before returning to the Netherlands, with the striker expected to be “made available” by the Italian club in the summer.

Forest are said to be “tracking” Van Hooijdonk’s development but it remains to be seen whether the club will pursue a move as the team fight for Premier League survival. Steve Cooper already has Brennan Johnson, Taiwo Awoniyi, Emmanuel Dennis and Sam Surridge at his disposal, as well as Andre Ayew and Newcastle United loanee Chris Wood.
