Nottingham Forest told Wembley final is 'theirs to lose' as pressure cranks up

Former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has claimed that Nottingham Forest's play-off final against Huddersfield Town is their "game to lose".

Forest travel to the national stadium for the first time since it opened 2007 looking to return to the Premier League after 23 years away. Huddersfield Town, who surpassed Luton Town in the semi-final, are their remaining hurdle to reaching the big time.

Carlos Corberan's side finished the regular season third with 23 wins and are eyeing up their own return to the top flight since being relegated in 2019. The two sides have already faced each other three times with Steve Cooper's side winning twice - including March's FA Cup victory.

With Sunday's decisive game standing between both teams and the Premier League, former Leicester City, Chelsea and Fulham shot-stopper praised the City Ground outfit.

"I was up there last week to watch them play against Sheffield United, even though they didn't particularly well, it was a great spectacle," Schwarzer told the GegenPod Football Podcast. "People forget, Nottingham Forest have won the European Cup twice in a row, insane to think that considering where they are.

"The atmosphere was brilliant, I haven't experienced that sort of atmosphere in a long time and they've got a young, exciting team, good mixture. The manager's done an unbelievable job."

The Australian also went onto discuss Huddersfield's chances at Wembley, predicting the outcome of the contest. He said: "I think they were a little fortunate to be drawn against Luton as out of the four teams I feel they were the weakest. I thought Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest were both better teams.

"I think they were also fortunate in the sense of positioning and the way they got to play each other. I think it's Nottingham Forest's game to lose and I feel they have the better team, better players, more exciting players, one of the most exciting talents to come out of the Championship in Brennan Johnson. I think the pressure is definitely on Forest to deliver on the big occasion."
