Nottingham Forest stance on midfielder's contract confirmed as Ethan Horvath enjoys 'luxury' opportunity

Here are the latest Nottingham Forest headlines brought to you by NottinghamshireLive on Monday, February 28.

Forest in talks with Ryan Yates over new contract

Nottingham Forest are in discussions with Ryan Yates over a new contract ahead of his current terms expiring next summer.

The 24-year-old's current contract has him tied down to the City Ground until the summer of 2023, but NottinghamshireLive understands that negotiations are underway with Steve Cooper looking to offer him a new deal.

It is understood that Yates' importance on Trentside makes him a valued member of the squad and is also evidence of the growing pathway for players from the Nigel Doughty Academy into the first-team.

Yates sat out Saturday's 2-0 win over Bristol City as Philip Zinckernagel and Cooper said that he - along with stand-in shot-stopper Ethan Horvath - are giving him a "headache" over how he selects the best possible side.

"it's never easy leaving Ryan Yates out, I'll be honest with you. It's never an easy decision," the Forest boss said.

"And it's definitely not an easy conversation, because, for as good a guy he is and as good a professional he is, he's a winner and he does not like sitting in that dugout."

Ethan Horvath enjoying Forest 'luxury' after taking his chance

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Ethan Horvath says it is a “luxury” to play behind such a sound defence.

Horvath is playing in the absence of the suspended Brice Samba and kept his second successive clean sheet as the Reds overcame Bristol City 2-0 at the City Ground thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson and James Garner.

The American is certainly taking his chance with both hands and is set to play again against Sheffield United on Friday as Samba completes his three-match ban.

"I'm very happy," Horvath told the Forest website. "My defence in the last two games have been excellent. Preston away was a tough game and we were disappointed not to win, but we were happy with the clean sheet."

Pundit makes Jamie Vardy comparison with Brennan Johnson

Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson's future was a hot topic of discussion for Colin Murray and Dean Ashton on EFL on Quest - but former England man Ashton had a word of warning for the talented youngster.

Johnson was one of the star performers for Steve Cooper's side as they gained ground on the Championship play-off spots with a 2-0 win over Bristol City.

Goals from him and James Garner secured the three points for Forest, lifting them to three points of the league's top-six.

And after yet another impressive performance against the Robins, the EFL on Quest duo were in agreement that Johnson will almost certainly be plying his trade in the Premier League next season - although Ashton did have a word of warning for the young star.

Speaking over a clip of Johnson going down under a tackle in the penalty area, Ashton added: "I don't like to see this though. He's been watching too much of Jamie Vardy. Sticking that right leg out trying to win a penalty, there's no need to do it."

Keinan Davis drawing interest from Premier League outfit

Nottingham Forest's on-loan striker Keinan Davis is drawing attention from Premier League scouts, according to reports.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a relatively successful time at Forest since making his January move to the City Ground with two goals and two assists to his name already.

He also produced impressive performances in Forest's FA Cup wins over Leicester City and Arsenal.

According to The Sun, his high-quality displays have resulted in interest from the Premier League with Mike Rigg, formerly Burnley's director of football, reported to have watched Davis on behalf of Norwich City last week.

Interest from Norwich City perhaps comes as little surprise given the Canaries are currently managed by former Villa boss Dean Smith.
