Nottingham Forest signing makes 'tough' admission after Newcastle United loss

Nottingham Forest summer signing Neco Williams has admitted after the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United that the squad are still getting to know each other due to "players coming in left, right and centre" during this transfer window.

The Wales international is one of 12 new arrivals at the City Ground following their promotion to the Premier League and was one of eight to feature at St James' Park on Saturday afternoon. Williams was fielded at right wing-back by head coach Steve Cooper, with Harry Toffolo on the opposite side with Moussa Niakhaté slotting into the centre of the back three.

In midfield, Lewis O'Brien joined Jack Colback in the middle, while Jesse Lingard was also involved from the off. Orel Mangala and Taiwo Awoniyi were both turned from the bench by Cooper in the second half.

"It was tough," Williams told BBC Sport, "we know every game in the Premier League is going to be tough. We are still getting to know each other, we’ve got players coming in left, right and centre, and it’s about getting to know each other better. I think when that comes together, the results will start improving.

"I don’t like to make excuses because we weren’t good enough today. Credit to Newcastle; they scored two incredible goals, but we need to be better, but there is no time to dwell on this game because the games will come quick, and there’s no time to be miserable or sad. We have to learn from our mistakes.

"For most of the lads, the Premier League is new – for a lot of the lads today, that was their debut. It’s going to be a rollercoaster, but we need to stick together and keep learning."
