Nottingham Forest promotion hero in Leicester City transfer link after shock departure

Former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Brice Samba has been linked with a surprise return to England with Premier League side Leicester City just 12 months after leaving the City Ground.

The Frenchman was a surprise departure from the club as part of a squad overhaul following his heroics in the play-offs to help the Reds to the Premier League last season. Samba was the hero in the semi-final against Sheffield United as Steve Cooper’s men booked their place at Wembley after a penalty shootout.

The goalkeeper played the full 90 minutes of the final at the national stadium as Forest came out as 1-0 winners over Huddersfield Town. The victory saw them return to the top division for the first time in 23 years.

Despite those heroics, the 28-year-old left the club in the summer after three years at the City Ground. A move to French side Lens came about after the goalkeeper rejected a new contract offer from Forest after reportedly deeming the terms ‘unacceptable’.

After his performances for Forest, Samba has continued to impress in France, helping the team to second in the Ligue 1 table after 13 matches. His form has led to reported interest from Leicester, French outlet MediaFoot claim that the Foxes have been ‘won over by his profile’, with the club ‘actively’ looking for a new goalkeeper in the summer.

Leicester sold long-standing number one Kasper Schmeichel to Ligue 1 side Nice in the summer. But, instead of bringing in a replacement, turned to long-term number two Danny Ward, who has started every Premier League game so far this season.

Uncertainty over the future of Samba in the summer, given his contract situation, led to Forest moving for another goalkeeper in the transfer window. The Reds completed the loan signing of Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, with the England man becoming a key player for the club as they aim to maintain their Premier League status come the end of the campaign.
