Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis linked with surprise takeover bid

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is being linked with a takeover bid for Italian Serie A side Monza.

Marinakis already owns Forest and Greek club Olympiacos and could be looking to add another team to his portfolio, according to reports in Italy. La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Marinakis wants to buy Monza, who are apparently available to buy following the death of their owner Silvio Berlusconi.

Former Italian prime minister Berlusconi died last week at the age of 86. The controversial figure was honoured with a state funeral in Milan, the city where he made his billions as the head of a media empire before entering politics in 1994.

Berlusconi took over Monza in 2018 and they went on to reach the Italian top flight for the first time. However, it is now reported that the late former AC Milan owner's family has put the Lombardy-based club up for sale.

Greek businessman Marinakis has been in charge at Forest since 2017. The Reds secured their long-awaited return to the Premier League by winning promotion via the Championship play-offs in 2022.

Under head coach Steve Cooper, Forest managed to retain their top flight status for another year in 2022-23 - the team eventually finishing 16th, four points clear of the relegation zone.
