Nottingham Forest old boy selling first England shirt after becoming delivery driver

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Neil Webb is selling his debut England shirt and cap for £15,000.

The 59-year-old played for Forest between 1985 and 1989, and again between 1992 and 1996, making over 175 league appearances for the club across both spells. He retired from the game 26 years ago and now works as a delivery driver, having previously been a postman after hanging up his boots.

Webb is now selling the famous mementos of his international debut at auction with Graham Budd Auctions, of Wellingborough, on June 6. He was the 1,000th footballer to represent England, making his debut as a second-half substitute in a friendly defeat to West Germany in 1987.

It was the first of 26 England caps Webb, who also played for Manchester United, earned in his career. But he is now auctioning his debut memorabilia off to add to his retirement fund.

“I’ve had numerous jobs over the last few years and at the moment I am a delivery driver,” he told the Mirror. “My generation earned good money and you could buy a nice house, a nice car and put your children through private education.

“But it is a different world for today’s players. I always knew I would have to work after I played. I can’t relate to the incredulous wages players get today. Even £100,000 a week – I can’t relate to that.

“My generation earned good money and you could buy a nice house, a nice car and put your children through private education.

“When I look back on my career I can say I played under Mr [Brian] Clough, Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Robson, three of the best ever British managers. I would have loved to play for Pep Guardiola. I admire the way he makes players better and moulds his teams.”
