Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has confirmed midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is undergoing a medical, with a view to completing a move from Newcastle United.
If all goes as planned, the 30-year-old will become the Reds’ fourth signing of the January window. Gustavo Scarpa, Danilo and Magpies loanee Chris Wood have already been added to the squad.
Shelvey is unlikely to be the last new arrival at the City Ground before Tuesday night’s 11pm deadline. Forest are also targeting a goalkeeper to cover for the injured Dean Henderson and a centre-back, while further attacking reinforcements are also possible, along with some outgoings.

"I won't deny that Jonjo is having a medical. I don't want to say much more than that at the moment, because we’ve got to respect the process,” said Cooper. “If the process is completed, then we can talk about that.
“Apart from that, there is nothing else to report. There’s a lot of work going on. Some things could happen, but they might not - and that’s in and out of the club.
“I’m sure there’s speculation about all sorts. Some of it may be true, some of it might be nowhere near the truth.
“That’s where we’re at at the moment. Obviously the window is closing soon, but that’s all I can say at the moment.
"Like any transfer window, you want the window to close with the squad in a stronger place than when it started. What's been slightly unfortunate for us, both before and during the window, is we’ve picked up injuries and some illnesses as well. That has added to the jigsaw of trying to put the squad together.
“We had some clear plans going into the window. Some of them are things we’ve tried to complete, but there has been some added stuff because of the injuries.
“The objective, always, is to try to make the squad stronger, have the right balance and depth, and improve the team. Any manager would say the same.
“There’s a lot of work going on. My mantra is just to work with the players you see every day, and when that changes, you adapt.
“My job is to coach the players and try to prepare for the next game.”
