Nottingham Forest make key 'decision' on promotion-winning duo

Nottingham Forest are said to be keen to tie defensive duo Joe Worrall and Scott McKenna to new contracts.

Both enjoyed terrific seasons, being at the heart of the Reds’ promotion success. And they could see their efforts rewarded with improved terms.

Worrall and McKenna have two years left to run on their current deals, which will expire in 2024. According to The Athletic, Forest want to offer them fresh contracts.

Academy graduate Worrall captained the team at Wembley as they secured their place in the Premier League with victory over Huddersfield Town. A natural leader, he had been wearing the armband when striker Lewis Grabban was out injured.

The 25-year-old last put pen to paper for his boyhood club in February 2020. His stock has only risen since then, having established himself as a key figure at the City Ground.

"I'm just very, very excited,” the centre-back has previously said of the step up to the top-flight. “It's something I want to test myself with, on a personal level. Some of the other boys do as well. We want to see if we can do it at that top level.”

McKenna arrived Trentside in the summer window of 2020 from Aberdeen, signing a four-year deal at the time. It has proved to be a brilliant bit of business by the Reds.

The Scotland international was crowned Forest’s Player of the Season for 2021/22, having been a consistently impressive performer. Alongside Worrall and January addition Steve Cook, he formed a back line which provided a solid foundation for Steve Cooper’s side to build on.

The Reds will also look to secure the futures of their head coach and youngster Brennan Johnson as the new campaign draws into view. In what is an important summer for the club, Taiwo Awoniyi became their first signing of the window when he made the switch from Union Berlin at the weekend.
