Nottingham Forest make contract offer as midfielder transfer link emerges

Nottingham Forest have announced their retained list, following the end of their promotion-winning campaign.

The Reds have four players whose contracts expire at the end of this month. And three of them have been let go.

Defenders Tobias Figueiredo, Gaetan Bong and Carl Jenkinson will depart the City Ground. However, the club are in talks with Lewis Grabban about a new deal, with the striker having missed the final weeks of the season because of injury.

Goalkeeper linked

Nottingham Forest have been linked with Argentina international Franco Armani as they face having to consider their goalkeeping options.

The Reds could lose first-choice Brice Samba this summer, in what would be a blow ahead of their return to the Premier League. With 12 months left on his contract, the 28-year-old is said to have deemed the terms of a new one “unacceptable” and told the club he is prepared to leave during this transfer window.

Unless the situation can be resolved, Forest would have to decide between cashing in on Samba now or seeing him leave as a free agent next year. Lens are said to have made a direct enquiry about securing his services.

The Reds have already been linked with Burnley’s Nick Pope. And reports from Argentina claim River Plate shot-stopper Armani is now on their radar.

Midfielder 'wanted'

Nottingham Forest want to sign Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles and the Gunners are "ready to sell" him, according to reports.

Maitland-Niles has recently returned to England having spent the second half of last season at Roma in search of greater playing opportunities.

According to John Cross of The Mirror, Forest have made the 24-year-old a transfer priority this summer and have already made contact with Arsenal to enquire about his availability.

Maitland-Niles has one year left on his deal at the Emirates and Arsenal may be looking to move him on for a fee now rather than risk losing him next summer for nothing. He remains keen to play regularly which is something Forest would be able to offer following their promotion to the Premier League.

Garner back?

James Garner is "likely" to join Nottingham Forest on a third loan spell from Manchester United, according to reports.

The 21-year-old central midfielder has become a fan-favourite on the banks of the River Trent following two loan spells, including one spanning the entirety of last year as the Red Devils academy graduate helped Forest win promotion into the Premier League.

Garner contributed four goals and eight assists in the Championship as he missed just one league fixture after returning to the City Ground midway through August 2021. During 69 appearances across Garner's time at Forest, he has scored eight goals and grabbed ten assists.

According to Football Transfers ' Jacque Talbot, Garner will remain on the United books beyond the summer as they fend off interest to sign the midfielder permanently; he will, however, head to the Midlands on another loan move. Leeds United, Leicester City, Everton and Southampton had all been identified as clubs monitoring the midfielder's situation.
