Goalkeepers, forgotten men, youngsters - Things we learned from Nottingham Forest training
International breaks always present an opportunity for youngsters to impress at their football clubs.
That is no different at Forest, with a number of first team players away on international duty. This week, six youngsters stepped up into the first team fold as they looked to impress head coach Steve Cooper.
Among the hottest prospects stepping up this week were Fin Back, a 19-year-old right-back, and Billy Fewster, 18, who has been standing out in central midfield for the under-23s.
Nottingham Forest's arch-rivals Derby County in '£1 million' George Clooney claim
Nottingham Forest's East Midlands rivals Derby County have been the subject of a £1 million claim by the interviewer of George Clooney amid reported takeover interest.
Clooney confirmed previous suspicions that the 60-year-old held a soft spot for Derby in an interview earlier this week. Money Monster co-star and Derby-native Jack O'Connell was the driving force behind getting the Oscar-winner interested in the Rams.
The American actor addressed the club's "problems" in the interview with DerbyshireLife released this week. “Derby has a great football club with a fantastic history, and I am sure there is a great future too,” Clooney predicts. “I know that there have been problems in recent times, but nothing that cannot be fixed.”
When every Nottingham Forest player's contract is due to expire as big summer approaches
Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has previously spoken about wanting “to build a team of permanent players who help you grow”.
Whether or not the Reds manage to achieve promotion this year, the head coach is keen to have a longer-term plan in place. He has said: “You want to try to build a consistency and a togetherness within the group. To do that, you need a group of players to be together over a length of time.”
Forest do have a number of players on the books who still have plenty of time to run on their contracts. For others, decisions will soon need to be made on their futures as the summer approaches.
Paul McGregor saw 'light and dark' of Brian Clough before 'dreadful' Ron Atkinson ended his Forest career
Before hitting record on an hour long interview, Paul McGregor discusses how he is. Happy and healthy he says in a normal aside when a person is asked how it is going.
By the time the recording ends it is clear how important happiness and health is to McGregor after a life of highs and lows. His football career was good. He still believes it might have been great, but there was plenty of light amidst moments of darkness.
Among Nottingham Forest fans, McGregor is best known for his goal against Lyon in 1995 which set up a UEFA Cup quarter-final against Bayern Munich. That might have been the catalyst to greatness, but by the age of 28 he was ready to retire after tears poured down his face on a near daily basis before training at Northampton Town.
