Nottingham Forest face referee repeat for Chelsea after controversial VAR penalty decision

The referee has been announced for Nottingham Forest’s Premier League clash against Chelsea at the weekend.

Forest travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon (3pm kick-off) looking to increase the gap between them and the relegation zone. A 4-3 win over Southampton on Monday night saw them move three points clear of the bottom three following Leicester City’s loss against Fulham a few hours earlier.

First half goals from Taiwo Awoniyi (x2) and Morgan Gibbs-White gave the Reds a 3-1 lead going into the half time break. Southampton did however get a goal back early in the second half to lift the nerves around the City Ground.

Forest restored their two goal lead through Danilo in the 73rd minute, and thought that they had extended their lead through Felipe near the end. After a memorable celebration by the defender, VAR ruled the goal to be offside.

Just a few minutes later, Southampton were awarded a spot kick by referee Michael Oliver when Romeo Lavia was adjudged to have been fouled by Sam Surridge in the penalty area. Replays showed that there was minimal contact, but after a check by VAR official Paul Tierney, the penalty stood, much to the dismay of some Forest fans.

James Ward-Prowse stepped up to score and make it a nervy last few minutes. A collective sigh of relief was heard around the City Ground when the full-time whistle blew.

The Premier League have now announced the officials who will take charge of Forest’s game vs Chelsea, with Tierney, who was on VAR duty against the Saints, the man in the middle for the game.

The 42-year-old has taken charge of four Forest games in the Premier League this season, with the Reds coming out as winners in two of those (vs Liverpool (H) and vs Leicester (H)). However, the most recent Forest game he took charge of was the 2-1 loss against Newcastle, when the Magpies were awarded a late penalty to win the game in stoppage time.

Neil Davies and Scott Ledger have been named as assistant referees for the clash vs Chelsea, while Robert Jones is the fourth official. Stuart Attwell will be in charge of VAR and will be assisted by Darren Cann.
